What’s today’s assembly about?

Find out how my brain remembers Find out my preferred learning style and what I should do with it Find out how to learn a list of words Find out how to memorise and understand a whole topic Find out how I can revise quickly but effectively

The brain likes…… water, smiles, pillow, koosh ball, CD, Coloured felt pens, string, mind map, banana??

Making sense of the world STIMULUSRECEPTOR RECALL Visual Auditory Kinaesthetic Multi  Eyes ----  Pictorial/Written Word  Ears ----  Sounds/ SpokenWord  Feelings ---  Sensations, Feelings and Movement  Eyes, Ears, Feelings… ---  Words, Sounds, Spoken word, sensations

Tip 1: Learning by association Link random bits to learn to parts of the body! Kettle Ice cream Ipod Cake Rabbit Watch Car Mobile horse

Why is it important to review? To ensure we can remember what we ’ ve covered! To ensure we pick up on what seems a bit rusty and so target those areas for improvement To work on bits we ’ re not so fab on and make us even better!! If you don’t use it you loose it! So we always need to refresh our minds and set good goals for moving forward..

Learning styles in the average class Visual 29% Auditory34% Kinaesthetic37% Remember in every class about 1/3 of us learn in these ways, so we need to be learning in all sorts of ways to help information stick in our heads!!

“You learn 10% of what you read, 15% of what you hear, but 80% of what you do for yourself ”

Don’t Forget…. 70% of what you learn is forgotten in 24 hours; About 40% is forgotten immediately! YOU MUST REVIEW

So self review, recap, revision (whatever you call it!) is very important for learning as jogs our memories and keeps our knowledge topped up.

Tip 2: ‘Can do attitude’ Be positive Take a positive view of yourself. If you've attended classes and done your coursework, there's every chance that you'll succeed. Don't think about problems, or what will happen if you fail. This is just wasting time which should be spent revising. Think about what you need to do, rather than about yourself. Just tell yourself that you'll make an effort - and you'll feel better.

Tip 3: ‘Learn off by heart’ The order of the planets How to learn it so you never forget… Learn off by heart!

What’s the order of the planets? 1.Sun 2.Mercury 3.Venus 4.Earth 5.Mars 6.Jupiter 7.Saturn 8.Uranus 9.Neptune 10.Pluto Quick learn by heart: Use memory jogger – a mnemonic…. S M V E M J S U N P Link associate with body / hands…

Here’s another idea… Crazy story links I got up one day in the summer holidays and the SUN shone brightly and caused the MERCURY to rise on the thermometer outside. ‘VENUS was her name’ by bananarama was on the radio, and made the EARTH thud as I pranced around the kitchen eating my MARS bar. I turned round to see my god daughters drawing for me on the fridge: JSUNP – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, Pluto being her favourite dog name… It was then I noticed the time, flicked off the radio and headed out to the car… A Linguistic example..

& a crazy song example… The Sun, Mercury, Venus… EARTH, EARTH… The Sun, Mercury, Venus… EARTH, EARTH… MARS EARTH, EARTH… MARS Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto is the last one of our planets!!! Musical.. To Yogi bear song…

Set yourself realistic goals… You can’t cram everything in at the last minute Have a revision timetable!!…. After a long day at school, by the time you get home, have tea, check your msn etc you then realistically have got 1- 2 hours max to revise. You need to work out a rota of what to do when….. Tip 4: ‘Be organised’

An example revision timetable for SATS… MonTuesWedThursFriSatSun Maths Eng Sci Eng Maths Sci Eng Sci Maths Eng Day off Sci Eng Depends on your strengths and weaknesses - but never leave one subject out just because you think you’re great at it!!!

An example revision timetable for GCSEs MonTuesWedThursFriSatSun Maths Geog Sci Hist Maths Sci Eng Geog Hums PE theory Day off Sci Eng Depends on your strengths and weaknesses and your options- but never leave one subject out just because you think you’re great at it!!! Depends on how long you have? etc

Tip 5: Reward yourself – have a break, don’t be a work nutter You’re brain concentrates on average your age plus 2 minutes… You must have quick break, just say 5 mins, listen to some music, grab a drink etc, then start again… (If you’re an adult then the max concentration is roughly 30 mins, but adults normally switch tasks without even realising it, and then revisit what they were doing….) In an evening, concentrate on one or 2 subjects max… break it up into small chunks…

Tip 6: Learning big topics… Get visual aids Take a theme like foods in French … Create a mind map of this.. Classify the information and add images …. Diagrams, posters, key words Hmm, let’s make this look jazzy!!

Tip 7: Quick and effective revision: Read, repeat, write, review Read a fact to yourself Turn it over repeat it to yourself Jot down Turn fact back over.. Did you get it right?! It will work with that list of dates… Try it!

What matters is not how intelligent you are, but how you are intelligent. UFA quote… because there is more than one type of intelligence.

So work out – be intelligent in your actions and think: When do I need to start revising? Where am I going to do this? How long am I going to dedicate / day? What needs learning – get a timetable? How to look after myself – sleep, good food, exercise Who can support me? – what do you need to tell them? Why am I doing it? To be proud, be a success, get somewhere…??
