Microscopes Parts Functions Usage

Best behavior - expensive Careful of lamp – hot Read signs for directions Some set up – fine focus only Explore on own - low power & coarse focus first

Eyepiece Body Tube Revolving Nosepiece Arm Objective Lens Stage Stage Clips Coarse Focus Fine Focus Base Diaphragm Light

Adjust coarse focus until stage is all the way down Place object on stage Click low power lens into place Look into the eyepiece – cover or close one eye Use the coarse focus until in view, then fine focus for detail to focus

Follow steps to focus using low power Click the nosepiece to the next higher power objective – middle, then high Do NOT use the coarse focus Use fine focus only in higher powers Use “pointer” to share findings What can you find on your slide?

Images Produced by Light Microscopes AmoebaStreptococcus bacteriaAnthrax bacteria Human cheek cells Plant cells Yeast cells

Images Produced by Electron Microscopes Cyanobacteria (TEM) Lactobacillus (SEM) Campylobacter (SEM) Deinococcus (SEM) House antAvian influenza virus Human eyelashYeast

Using Microscopes to Visualize the Three Shapes of Bacteria Light microscope: Three shapes of bacteria taken with an SEM Bacilli (rod)Cocci (round) Spirilla (spiral)
