Section 2.1 Parenting and Families Parenting is a learning process with many demands and rewards. There are many decisions that must be made before and during parenthood.

Preparation for Parenthood Being a parent is one of the most important roles a person has in life. A person needs emotional maturity to handle the changes and demands of parenthood. emotional maturity Being responsible enough to consistently put someone else’s needs before your own needs.

Preparation for Parenthood Raising a child is expensive, so managing resources wisely is important for families. There are many ways to learn parenting skills. Parents develop in stages as their children develop.

Preparation for Parenthood Stage Time Period Parents’ Tasks

Parenting Responsibilities and Rewards Parents feel great joy when a new child joins the family. Once people become parents, they must put the needs of their children ahead of their own needs. List some of the needs of children that parents must be prepared to meet. 5

Parenting Responsibilities and Rewards Caring for a child takes a huge amount of time and energy. Parenthood requires many emotional adjustments.

Parenting Responsibilities and Rewards Mothers and fathers are legally responsible to provide food, shelter, clothing, medical care, education, and legal help for their children. Parenthood has many rewards.

Consequences of Sexual Activity Sexual activity as a teen can cause difficulties in future relationships and loss of self-respect. STIs and pregnancy are potential outcomes of sexual activity. sexually transmitted infection (STI) A disease that is spread from one person to another by sexual contact.

Consequences of Sexual Activity Pregnant teens face health risks, emotional and social stress, financial issues, and education challenges. What are some specific challenges that pregnancy might pose for a teenager?

Teen Parenting Options Pregnant teens’ options include marriage, single parenthood, and adoption. Teen parents need help to decide what is best for them and their baby. Many teen parents suffer from burnout or depression.

Take Responsibility Sexual responsibility means knowing the facts about sexuality, and basing your decisions on values. Having a relationship based on fidelity shows responsibility. fidelity Faithfulness to an obligation, duty, or trust.
