Your life depends on it!! Essential Questions How do you stay safe in a lab? Why is safety important?
Safety is Your Responsibility
LAB SAFETY REVEIW PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION. Approved eye protection devices (like goggles) are used in the laboratory… A) to avoid eye strain B) to wear.
Lab Safety Rules. Basic Safety Rules Use common sense. No unauthorized experiments. Handle chemicals/glassware with respect.

SAFETY IN THE LAB. It is very important to follow safety procedures in any lab situation because:  Some lab activities require the use of flammable materials.
Teachers are responsible for classroom safety. All of it.

General Safety Rules and Procedures A. Personal Safety 1- Body and Clothing Protection  Laboratory coats must be worn and buttoned while in the laboratory.  Laboratory coats should not be worn outside the laboratory.  Protective eyewear must be worn when performing any exercise or procedure in the laboratory.  Only closed-toe shoes are to be worn in the laboratory. Sandals are not permitted.

Hand Protection – Rubber or plastic gloves should be provided for students to use when handling preserved organisms. – Anyone with breaks in the skin or unhealed scratches should cover it by a bandage when working in the lab. – Hands must be washed before leaving the laboratory

GENERAL RULES Work areas/surfaces must be disinfected before and after use. Wipe off working area with freshly prepared phenolic compound solution before and after each day's work. If a culture is dropped or spilled, pour a freshly prepared 1% sodium hypochlorite over the contaminated area, cover with paper towels and let stand for at least 15 minutes. Do not open Petri dishes in the lab unless absolutely necessary. Inoculating loops and forceps should be flame sterilized in a Bunsen burner before you lay them down.

Turn off Bunsen burners when not is use. Long hair must be restrained if Bunsen burners are in use. Treat all microorganisms as potential pathogens. Use appropriate care and do not take cultures out of the laboratory Familiarize yourself with the location of safety equipment in the lab (e.g., eye-wash station, shower, sinks, fire extinguisher, biological safety cabinet, first aid kit, emergency gas valve).

Label all materials with their name, date, and any other applicable information (e.g., media, organism, etc.). When handling chemicals, note the hazard code on the bottle and take the appropriate precautions indicated. Do not pour chemicals down the sink. Return all chemicals, reagents, cultures, and glassware to their appropriate places. Replace caps on reagents, solution bottles, and bacterial cultures.

Disposing the material  Autoclave liquids and broth cultures to sterilize them before discarding.  Dispose of all solid waste material in a biohazard bag and autoclave it before discarding in the regular trash.  Dispose of broken glass in the broken glass container.  Dispose of razor blades, syringe needles, and sharp metal objects in the “sharps” container.

Sharp disposable container

Do Not  Eat or drink in the lab  Use the mobile or head phone  Taste any chemicals or substances you are working with  Use your mouth for pipetting substances  Handle broken glass with bare hands  The application of cosmetics in the laboratory is prohibited.  Operate lab equipment without permission  Leave any heated materials unattended  Place flammable substances near heat
