POMPEII The city of Pompeii was in central Italy, near modern Naples. The town, founded around the 6th-7th century BC, was located about 8 km away from Mount Vesuvius.

Mount Vesuvius The eruption was cataclysmic for the town. It was mostly destroyed and buried under a thick carpet, 4 to 6 m, of volcanic ash in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius at 79 AD. Sixteen years after that telltale earthquake the volcano erupted again. Mount Vesuvius has not erupted since 1944, but it is still one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. A Story From Back Then…

…When Time Stood Still… Two thousand years ago in a city called Pompeii the sun was shining, the birds were singing and the sea was calm. It seemed that that day wouldn’t be interrupted by anything bad. A fisherman named Augustus just woke up. He had a lot to do that day. Two thousand years ago in a city called Pompeii the sun was shining, the birds were singing and the sea was calm. It seemed that that day wouldn’t be interrupted by anything bad. A fisherman named Augustus just woke up. He had a lot to do that day. First he had to go to the bakery to buy some bread for his family. Then he had to go to the port to prepare his boat and go fishing. First he had to go to the bakery to buy some bread for his family. Then he had to go to the port to prepare his boat and go fishing.

…When Time Stood Still… On his way to the bakery he met a strange man shouting “The end is near! Protect yourselves, leave the city immediately! Otherwise you will DIE!!!” Although he didn’t believe him, he got scared. He bought a loaf of bread, returned home and told his family what had happened outside the shop. They didn’t believe him either and said he was just a crazy man. The fisherman then left his home with a feeling that something bad would happen that day. …When Time Stood Still… He was near the port when he felt a horrible tremble beneath his feet. Simultaneously he heard a roar coming from the mountain above him; Vesuvius was waking up. He was terrified and he didn’t know what to do. Should he go to his boat or should he run to his family? Suddenly ashes and smoke surrounded him. Tons of rocks started to fall down the volcano. A few minutes later the eruption started. Lava was coming down the volcano. People around him were screaming and running in panic. Augustus thought that the man he met near the baker’s was right. He had predicted everything! He decided to run to his house and protect his family. In the next few minutes everything was covered in lava.
