Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. Hurricane Katrina/How Would You Respond to a Disaster You have now viewed interactives showing the extent of the damage caused by Katrina and the response of the government to the disaster. If you were currently may or of a southern coastal city and you received a report that a substantial hurricane was on its way, how would you react? a)I would prepare to evacuate the city as soon as the national weather service alerted me that the hurricane was on its way. After Katrina, no one can be too careful. b)I would wait to evacuate the city until it becomes 100% clear that the city is really in trouble. It is important to examine the details of each situation before panicking, since not every situation is the same as Katrina.

Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. Hurricane Katrina/How Would You Respond to a Disaster You are a member of Congress investigating the aftermath of Katrina. On whom do you place most of the blame for the mix-ups and slow response? a)The federal government was at fault for not responding immediately and for not getting aid to New Orleans more quickly. b)The state and local governments should have taken responsibility more quickly and they are to blame for not doing so. c)All levels of government are responsible; multiple levels of government should have been able to work together to get aid to the people.

If the president asked your advice about how to "fix" FEMA, which of the following would you suggest he do first? a)Nominate a new leader with disaster- preparedness experience b)Hire more staff c)Increase the organization's budget d)Determine a working chain of command e)Disband the organization; FEMA cannot be fixed
