Linux Mint 1 Introduction Linux Mint is a computer operating system based on the Linux distribution Ubuntu. Linux Mint is intended to be a modern, elegant and comfortable operating system which is both powerful and easy to use. Linux Mint provides a more complete out of the box experience by including proprietary and patented software.

Advantages  The advantages of Linux Mint would be that it is a well known operating system, not only does it provide you with the basic features that will be seen in other operating systems such as the music player, the filing system, calculator, etc.  But also provides you with added features that you may not expect, such as Open Office, a program with all the office tools you will need, and Pidgin Messenger, an instant messenger service. It also displays a modern layout which is different to other operating systems.

Disadvantages  The disadvantages of Linux Mint would be that for it would be harder to use for new users to work, it may be confusing for buyers as there are many different variations of Linux and users may be confused into deciding which one is more suitable for them, it is not as advertised or as popular as other operating systems such as Windows, therefore it may be harder to research and find answers to problems you may be experiencing with it.

How to install from cd/ dvd 1. First, back up your files 2. Download and burn Linux Mint to a CD 3. Linux Mint may take anywhere from 30 secs to 5 minutes to load, depending on your computer. 4. Install Just click the link on the desktop, or find it in the menu

Linux file formats can be accessed in a variety of ways because they are free. Windows on the other hand makes you lock your own data in secret formats that can only be accessed with tools leased to you at the vendor’s price. Linux is open source so you are unlikely to violate any license agreement. All the software is happily yours. Linux beats Windows hands down on network features, as a development platform, in data processing capabilities, and as a scientific workstation. Linux is customizable in a way that Windows is not. Windows must boot from a primary partition. Linux can boot from either a primary partition or a logical partition inside an extended partition. Windows must boot from the first hard disk. Linux can boot from any hard disk in the computer.

Recommendations Dual boot to pilot the Linux Mint 13 operating system

Conclusion The purpose of Linux Mint is to provide a desktop operating system that home uses and companies can use at no cost which is easy and efficient to use, and elegant as possible.
