Copyright Information IFAST Secretariat Report Prepared for IFAST 19 Calgary, AB, Canada June 6-7, 2002 by Megan Hayes IFAST Secretariat ATIS Manager for Technology Development

IFAST and Copyright ATIS, as the IFAST Secretariat and the legal entity that represents IFAST, holds the copyright in all IFAST documents and materials on behalf of IFAST.

Copyright Primer Copyright protection is provided by the laws of the United States Copyright protection is provided to the authors of “original works of authorship” Protects both published and unpublished works Protection begins when work exists in fixed form

Copyright Primer Under the Copyright Act, owners are given the exclusive right to, and to authorize others to: –Reproduce the work –Prepare derivative works based upon the work –Distribute copies of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership or by rental, lease or lending

International Protections There is no such thing as “international copyright” that protects rights throughout the world. Protection in a given country depends upon that country’s national laws. Some countries offer little or no protection for foreign works.

International Protections International Copyright Treaties and Conventions simplify protection to foreign works –Berne Union for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Property –Universal Copyright Convention If a country is a party to one of these conventions, the work may be protected in that country by complying with the conditions of the convention
