A last kilometer issue in Madrid Serenate Workshop September 2002, La Hulpe Jesús Marco Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas IFCA (Santander) SPAIN

18-IX-02J.Marco: A last kilometer issue in Madrid 1st Serenate Workshop (La Hulpe) 2 The Issue Points CIEMAT is a large spanish scientific installation in Madrid (Spain), with national & international projects… with a low bandwidth (2 Mbps) and saturated connection to the NREN RedIRIS central site (Geant node) is also in Madrid, at a couple of kilometers How to improve the link? –Organizational questions –Solving the problem

18-IX-02J.Marco: A last kilometer issue in Madrid 1st Serenate Workshop (La Hulpe) 3 CIEMAT Research Public Institution attached to the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCyT) Fields of Activity Fossil Fuels Nuclear Fission Energy Nuclear Fusion HEP Physics Renewable Energies Environmental Quality >1000 people (>500 scientists) Central site in Madrid city: 20 Ha., m2 in 27 buildings

18-IX-02J.Marco: A last kilometer issue in Madrid 1st Serenate Workshop (La Hulpe) 4 CIEMAT ( campus level ) >20 departamental servers >650 desktops Supercomputing infrastructure Network: 4km optical fiber + cable 23 people in IT department 2Mbps

18-IX-02J.Marco: A last kilometer issue in Madrid 1st Serenate Workshop (La Hulpe) 5 RedIRIS Site (NREN) CIEMAT 3 km MADRID Regional/Metropolitan European Interconnect National Three Level Model

18-IX-02J.Marco: A last kilometer issue in Madrid 1st Serenate Workshop (La Hulpe) 6 EL TRAFICO DE MADRID EN TIEMPO REAL Traffic (cars) in Madrid at 6.30 am Traffic (cars) in Madrid now (8.30 am) Many complains from users (in particular those with international projects)

18-IX-02J.Marco: A last kilometer issue in Madrid 1st Serenate Workshop (La Hulpe) 7 Organizational questions NREN in Spain: –RedIRIS takes care of the National Backbone In process of upgrade to 2.5Gbps, 622,155 Mbps redundant topology –17 autonomies, each one with a RedIRIS connection node, should take care “inside” its domain of the “campus” connection –CIEMAT in Madrid, but... central organization was a Ministry of Industry institution Now a MCyT institution –The 2 Mbps link paid by CIEMAT (20keuros/year) –So, new link cost on CIEMAT...

18-IX-02J.Marco: A last kilometer issue in Madrid 1st Serenate Workshop (La Hulpe) 8 Solving the problem CIEMAT solution: –Discussion and collaboration with NREN: Antonio Mollinedo(CIEMAT) met Esther Robles(RedIRIS) last year (in annual RedIRIS meeting) –CIEMAT has opted for a direct fast-ethernet link (now being contracted, ready by end of the year) Good possibility in a metropolitan range Administrative/Legal solution: via a genomic project Reasonable Cost: 36Keuros –Other possibilities discussed: New optical ring (paid by Madrid Community) joining all academical institutions, and through RedIRIS site New fast links for Universities, CIEMAT close to the Universidad Complutense de Madrid campus UAM (was also at 2Mbps, at 30 km): now radio-link

18-IX-02J.Marco: A last kilometer issue in Madrid 1st Serenate Workshop (La Hulpe) 9 Conclusions Disclaimer: This is only my “experienced” user point of view (in particular regarding Administrative issues) Short Distance makes this problem Outstanding In fact, the short distance factor (inside metropolitan area) gives more possibilities for connection… Organizational issues do weight! –Legal/Administrative(/Political?) issues Quite difficult to solve some times (even if cost is not high) –Collaboration/Support between Final Users (Feedback and Project Support) Campus Level Network Responsible & Institution NREN Many thanks to Esther Robles and Antonio Mollinedo for the information
