HISTORY The island has been contiguously inhabited from as early as the Paleolithic era. it was first used as a resort area by Romans when Ottaviano (soon to be Augustus) took possession of it in 29 BC. After changing hands throughout the Middle Ages, Capri grew as a tourist destination when its first modern hotel was built in the 19th century. Caesar Augustus was the first to discover the charm of Capri when he visited the island in 29 BC. So taken was he with the island's beauty that he traded the nearby fertile Ischia for it with the city of Naples.
