1 Proposals for MOC and IoT China Communications Standards Association Minrui Shi 21st meeting CJK UNIOT-WG July,11-13, 2011 China

What is MOC Machine-oriented communication is a form of communication that involves one or more entities that do not necessarily require human interaction or intervention in the process of communication.

MOC applications Health care Security and surveillance Connected home appliance Transport Smart grid

Goals of Y.MOC-reqts To provide service overview, description of MOC ecosystem and key supporting features of MOC applications; To collect the service requirements to support MOC applications; To identify the requirements of extended or new NGN capabilities based on the MOC service requirements; To develop the reference framework for MOC capabilities.

Status of Y.MOC-reqts This plan is to finalize Y.MOC-reqts in Feb The current-version document is available in TD911 (GEN NGN GSI). Current Y.MOC-reqts under study: NGN domain capability requirements to support MOC applications MOC device domain capability requirements to support MOC applications Reference framework for MOC capabilities

Overview of IoT RS232 Zigbee … Device domain Application domain gateway Remote management Application Middleware …… Charging and accounting Network domain Resource Repository Application management NGN/NON NGN

Overview of IoT Device domain: Sensing : to provide raw data/materials for information producing (e.g. sensor, GPS) Controlling : to do some action by receiving signals (e.g. air- condition). Network domain transportation: to transport raw data or control signals securely and reliably. Application middleware Hide network topology Provide open environments for applications Share raw data between different applications Application domain: information producing

Relations between MOC and IoT IoT: is a general concept Reusing an existing technology A set of applications For information producing or controlling By inter-connecting things Using devices (machines) without human intervention MOC: MOC is a specific term in NGN to classify IoT applications as one of the services NGN could support. MOC applications may be regarded as the IoT cases in NGN.

M2M MOC and M2M/MTC M2M Communicatons:is about communication among Machines without (or only limited) human intervention(ETSI) MTC:Machine type communication is a form of data communication which involves one or more entities that do not necessarily need human interaction. (3GPP) machines IoT MTC MOC 3GPP network NGN 3GPP2 network Applications Network domain Application domain device domain

Conclusions MOC/MTC/M2M are the specific terms adopted in different SDOs. Common characteristics: without human intervention or interaction MOC is a set of NGN features/capabilities for supporting IoT. MOC applications may be regarded as the IoT cases in NGN.

Proposals To change the title of Y.MOC-Reqts to “Requirements for support of IoT in the NGN environment” To identify the Requirements of IoT based on the Y.MOC- reqts Reuse service requirements Identify capability requirements of middleware Identify requirements capability of device Identify security aspect of IoT We are looking forward to the collaboration among CJK members for these proposals.
