Homework The Year 6 children are set Maths, English and Spelling homework on Friday. In addition to this they may be set a Topic project or Religion work. ALL homework is to be returned to their teacher on the following Wednesday. Please sign your child’s homework diary each week. Also, we ask that you sign your child’s reading record every day to show that they have read. Children who can show they have read 5 night a week until the last week of half term will be rewarded with a special trip! We do expect the correct amount of time to be spent on homework and for it to be high quality. Children will be asked to do it again if it is not of the correct standard and may miss part of break times as a sanction for this. This is all good practise for secondary school.
How can parents help? The best help is interest taken in learning and progress. Supporting homework. Good communication between the school and home. Getting a good sleep on a school night!
How can I help with writing? Again, reading a variety of texts – the more children read, the more familiar they become with different text types Reading homework – text analysis Writing homework –Sentence structure Spelling – spelling lists / rules every week Grammar and punctuation homework
How can I help with reading? Ensure your child reads every night! Encourage them to read fiction and non-fiction. Try to listen to your child read and talk to them about what they are reading. Help them with the different skills of reading especially ‘skim’ reading where they are looking for key words in the text. Speed reading for fluency Reading homework
How can I help with Maths? Support with homework – not just helping with the Maths but reading the question can really help. TIMES TABLES!!! Help your child to check their work through – this will help them to spot mistakes that can sometimes be easily fixed.
What can you do to help? Maths Times tables must be known up to at least 12 x 12 Estimating, weighing, measuring are all good to discuss and do practically. Must use metric measures. Money – using it in the shops, working out change, adding up bills, questions e.g. if 1 bag of sugar costs 56p, how many will 7 cost? Mental addition, subtraction, multiplication & division Reading and writing numbers to 10 000 000 ! Doubling and halving, including decimals Solving number puzzles e.g. Sudoko
