Help Wanted! Opening for Physicist …

Overview Purpose: –Learn about topics and technology currently being developed in the area of physics. –Determine the benefits/risks associated with the topic. –Communicate information to peers and the world using a multimedia presentation, a newsletter, and/or a Web page.

Research Teams of four will research one of the following topics: Lasers Superconductors Fusion Optical engineering Speed of light Condensed matter Biophysics Chaos theory Quantum teleportation Other topics are open for consideration— let’s discuss your ideas.

Research Use the Template for Help Wanted Research worksheet to guide your research of your topic. Focus on answering: –What is known about my topic? –What do scientists want to know about my topic? –Why is this area being researched and developed? –What are the associated benefits/risks? –Who are the experts in this field?

Research Use the Help Wanted Internet Research Links worksheet to get you started on Internet sources. Go to the public library and check out a book or journal to use as a reference for your topic.

Presentation Create a multimedia presentation sharing your research information with the class. Use the presentation checklist as a guide. When complete, use the presentation scoring guide to assess your work. Modify your presentation as needed.

Newsletter Special Interest Lobby. Choose a side, either promoting or discouraging further research in the topic you studied. Create a newsletter to convince others to either support or fight a spending bill. Use the newsletter scoring guide to guide and assess your work.

Optional Web Page Provide background information about your topic. Create an online quiz for others to take. Start on online discussion board. Offer a feedback page.

Timeline Week 1—Preparation –Days 1 and 2—Atomic café video and discussion. –Days 3 and 4—Research topics (2 hours in class and 2 hours at home). –Day 5—Begin presentations. –HW: Visit the public library.
