Modifications for Students with Learning Disabilities NET-AT Workshop #2 January 20, 2006

Assistive Technology Devices Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities

Assistive Technology Services Any service that directly assists an individual with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device –Evaluation of Needs –Acquisition of devices –Selection, design, customization, repair –Coordination of services –Training and/or technical assistance

Assistive Technology Considerations IDEA requires: –Teachers consider whether or not the student requires AT devices and services When considering AT there are only 4 general conclusions that can be reached –Current interventions are working and nothing new is needed –AT is being used and is working –IEP team may conclude that new AT should be tried –IEP team doesn’t know enough to make a decision and more information needs to be gathered (e.g., resources, AT evaluation, call for help).
