What is Energy and It’s Transformations? By: Kanoe Perry

Energy- The ability to do work or cause change Energy Conservation-energy can not be created or destroyed, it can only change in form Energy transformation- process in which energy changes from one form to another

Energy Has Two Forms Potential energy- energy that is stored by an object as a result of its position. The higher an object the greater potential energy it has. Energy that are considered potential energy: Chemical energy Mechanical energy Electrical energy Kinetic energy- the energy of motion. The faster the motion of an object the greater the kinetic energy Energy that are considered potential energy: Thermal energy Solar and light energy Mechanical energy

Example of Kinetic Energy and Potential Energy Can you give an example?

Electrical Energy- energy that comes from an electric current. Television Radios Power lines Computers Refrigerator

Thermal Energy- heat energy that transfers between objects with different temperature Stove Matches Sun (sunburns) Candles Water Heaters

Chemical Energy- energy that can be released by a chemical reaction. Batteries Fireworks Generators Chargers Photosynthesis Burning Gasoline Food

Mechanical Energy- the combination of kinetic energy (energy of motion) and potential energy (stored energy) something has. A weightlifter applies a force to cause a barbell to be displaced. The barbell then posses mechanical energy-all in the form of potential energy Windup toys Pounding a hammer Wreaking ball Water Heaters

Light Energy- visible light from the sun (radiation we can see) Solar Energy- energy that comes from the sun (anything powered by the sun that doesn’t use batteries) Light bulbs Solar Lunar Solar panels Calculators Warmth from sun’s radiation

Sound energy- energy you can hear that travels on air waves. Car alarm Buzzing of a bee Voices and noise you hear Music Sound of a door slamming

Different Transformations of Energy flashlight add Batteries (chemical energy) Flashlight turns on (electrical energy) The flashlight’s bulb shines (light energy) Results are:

…..examples…. Manual Emergency Radio Turn the crank (potential energy) Radio turns on (electrical energy) Sound comes out (sound energy)

….examples…. Solar Panel water heater Solar panels absorb light from the sun using solar cells (solar and light energy) Water heater is turned on (electrical energy) Water is heated and you have a hot bath (thermal energy

……more examples….. Light bulb Flip a light switch to turn on light (electrical energy) Light from the bulb brightens the room (light energy) The longer the light is on the hotter the bulb gets (thermal energy)

Let’s Do An Experiment….. Candle vs. Marshmallow What do you think is going to happen to the marshmallow? What type of energy is being used? What did you noticed? Was your prediction correct? Why?

……last example….. Camp fire (thermal, chemical and light energy) Marshmallows (chemical energy) Holding marshmallow over the fire NOT touching the fire (potential energy and thermal energy) Heat from the fire rises up to heat the marshmallow (thermal energy) Marshmallow absorbs heat and turns black (thermal energy)

Recap Shall We….. What is energy? Where does energy come from? Can energy be destroyed? Why or Why not? What can happen? Can energy transform? If so into what? Name the two groups that energy is divided into? Can you give me an example of one? Both? Name me the different types of energy. Can you give me a definition? Example? Can you quickly describe to me an energy transformation? (flashlight, solar panels, emergency radio, ect) Can you describe an energy transformation not mentioned? Something you though of or made a connection with? What happened to the marshmallow? What type of energy was being used? Can we always see energy? Can we always see thermal energy? What’s another example of thermal energy that we see and feel everyday?

The End!
