Terms The term distance refers to how long, wide or tall something is. The term volume refers to how much space something takes up. The term mass refers to how much matter is in something.
Units of Measurement Distance is measured in the units meters. Volume is measured in the units liters. Mass is measured in the units grams.
Instruments of Measurement The instrument used to measure distance is a metric ruler, meter stick, or metric tape. The instrument used to measure liquid volume is a graduated cylinder. The instrument used to measure the volume of a cube is a metric ruler (l x w x h). The instrument used to measure mass is a triple-beam balance.
The Basis of the Metric System The metric system is based on the fact that: one gram of water in one cubic centimeter fills one milliliter.
