Script: Dialogue 1 Lin: Have you ever seen Beijing Opera before? Tony: No, never. Lin: Beijing Opera is one of our major traditional operas. Tony: Oh, yes. I’ve heard about that. Lin: The basic ways of performance include chang ( 唱 ), nian ( 念 ), zuo ( 做 ), and da ( 打 ). That is, singing, reciting, acting and fighting. Tony: That’s interesting and a little confusing for me. Lin: The roles can be classified into sheng ( 生 ), dan ( 旦 ), jing ( 净 ) and chou ( 丑 ).

Tony: What is sheng? Lin: It refers to male roles. Tony: Oh. And dan? Lin: Female roles are called dan. Tony: What about jing? Lin: They are male roles with facial paintings and rough personality. Tony: The last one is chou. What is it? Lin: Chou are funny clowns ( 丑角 ). Have you got some idea of Beijing opera now? Tony: Yes. I just can’t wait to see the performance.

Script: Dialogue 2 David: So, how do you like living in Beijing? Mary: I love the city. Beijing is such a great city. David: Did you have any trouble getting used to the way of life there? Mary: Oh, sure, but only a little at first. I am pretty used to it after some time. David: This is the first time I’ve been in Beijing. What place shall I visit first? Mary: The Great Wall. It’s the wonder of ancient ( 古代的 ) China.

David: What else? Mary: The Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and many other attractions. They are all worth seeing. David: How many days are needed for me to see them all? Mary: I’m afraid you have to spend at least three days. David: Can’t I manage within two days? Mary: No, not likely. The Great wall is far from the city, and it alone will take you a whole day. David: I see.
