Grant Instructions: RFA or PA Read through the guidelines carefully Make notes on specifications in the announcement, such as: Funding limits Page limits Eligibility NIH Office of Extramural Research Search for: Funding opportunities Forms & Applications Due dates and Submission policies, etc.

Types of Proposals Unsolicited Proposal Investigator-Initiated Research Submitted according to sponsor’s broad guidelines Funding arrangement is usually a grant Standard due dates by cycle Parent Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) Examples: PA = Research Project Grant (Parent R01) PA = NRSA Training Grant (Parent T32) PA = Admin Supplement to Existing NIH grant (Parent Admin Supp)

Types of Proposals Solicited Proposal Submitted in response to a specific work statement from the sponsor Request for Application (RFA) Solicits grant or cooperative agreement applications Well-defined scientific area to accomplish specific program objectives Indicates amount of funds, number of awards, and standard due dates Request for Proposal (RFP) Sponsor solicits a response to award a contract Research meets a specific need for sponsor’s direct benefit Single application receipt date

Standard Receipt Dates for NIH

Budget Basics Direct Costs Facilities and Administrative (F&A) Costs Indirect Costs Total Costs Modified Total Direct Costs (MTDC) Total Direct Costs (TDC)

Basic Expenditure Considerations Allowable Cost item meets sponsor requirements Allocable Particular cost item can be specifically identified with the project or can be clearly allocated to the project Reasonable Would a prudent person have incurred the expense under the circumstances? Is the item necessary for the project?

Two Distinct Budget Formats Non-Modular Format Used for research grant applications requesting more than $250,000 direct costs per year Modular Format Used for research grant applications requesting less than $250,000 direct costs per year

Budget Justification Specific to the sponsor Non-Modular and Modular Requirements are different Provide the justification for each individual in the same order as listed on the budget page (PI first, remaining in role importance) Present the categories in the same order as on the budget page Give additional information if it isn’t obvious in the budget
