NFHS Wrestling Rules Each state high school association adopting these NFHS wrestling rules is the sole and exclusive source of binding rules interpretations for contests involving its member schools. Any person having questions about the interpretation of NFHS wrestling rules should contact the wrestling rules interpreter designated by his or her state high school association. The NFHS is the sole and exclusive source of model interpretations of NFHS wrestling rules. State rules interpreters may contact the NFHS for model wrestling rules interpretations. No other model wrestling rules interpretations should be considered.

NFHS Wrestling Editorial Changes  Deleted the word “individual” before “wrestler.”  Deleted the words “allow an otherwise illegal piece of equipment “ and added the word “heighten” before “risk.”  1-2-2; 1-3-4c Added the word “sequential” before “order.”  Moved Article over from Match.  Diagrams Added more specific dimensions on each mat area diagram.  Further clarified the rules language on scales for weighing in contestants.  Deleted the words “(male and female)” after “contestants.”

NFHS Wrestling Editorial Changes  5-5-1, 2; Added the words “at the scorer’s table” to further clarify where a coach and referee conference is to take place at.  a(5) (NEW) Added “head” as another usual point of support down on the mat.  Further clarified the rules language on the random draw.  ; Clarified that penalty points for unnecessary roughness shall be awarded in addition to points earned.  Further clarified the responsibility of the home team administration when removing a spectator when directed by the referee.  Standardized the rules language from “handicapped” to “impairment.”

NFHS Wrestling Editorial Changes  8-1-2c Clarified the position/location of the offensive wrestler when warning or penalizing the offensive wrestler for stalling or a technical violation when the defensive wrestler is on their feet.  Added the words “flagrant misconduct” to better illustrate the penalty to impose on a wrestler.  9-2-2a, b, o Clarified the rules language on breaking ties in dual-meet competition.  Photos 18, 36, 49, 83, 91 Revised the text under the photos.

All competitors must meet this standard or wear an appropriate cover. This cover must be worn to the weigh- in for the referee’s approval and then removed prior to stepping on the scale. © REFEREE ENTERPISES INC RULE CHANGE Second Injury Time-Out Rule 8-2-1h EXCEPTIONS If the second injury time-out is taken at the conclusion of the first 30-second tiebreaker period and the opponent already has the choice at the beginning of the second 30-second tiebreaker period, the opponent would then have the added choice at the first restart after the beginning of the second 30-second tiebreaker period. © REFEREE ENTERPISES INC RULE CHANGE Tournament Advancement Rule If two wrestlers, in the championship bracket simultaneously cannot continue the match due to both being disqualified for stalling or having their injury or blood time elapse, the wrestler who is leading on points at the time the match is terminated will continue in the consolation bracket. If the match is tied at the time of termination, neither wrestler will continue. PlayPic ® A

Representation Rule 1-4  Rule 1-4-3: No wrestler shall represent the school in more than one weight class in any meet or wrestle in more than five matches (championship or consolation), excluding forfeits in any one day of competition.  Rule 1-4-4: No contestant shall wrestle in two consecutive matches with less than a 45-minute rest between them. The conclusion time of each match shall be recorded.  Rule 1-4-5: A contestant shall not accept a forfeit in one weight class and compete in another class.

Team Benches Rule 2-2 *Rule 2-2-1: 10 feet *Rule 2-2-1: For dual meets, all team personnel, including coaches, other than actual participating contestants shall be restricted to an area which is at least 10 feet from the edge of the mat and the scorer’s table, where facilities permit. *Rule 2-2-2:two 10 feet *Rule 2-2-2: During tournament competition, a maximum of two team personnel (coaches and/or non-participating contestants) will be permitted on chairs at the edge of the mat. It is permissible to allow coaches on the corner of the mat in a restricted zone. In tournaments where coaches are permitted on the corner of the mat, the restricted zone shall be defined by either a contrasting line marked on the mat with paint or tape or a contrasting colored surface under the chairs. The restricted zone shall be no closer than 5 feet to the edge of the circle. Coaches shall be seated at least 10 feet from the scorer’s table, where facilities permit.

Conduct of Coaches, Team Personnel and Others *Rule 7-5-2: *Rule 7-5-2: Coaches and other team personnel are restricted to the bench/chairs while the clock is running and during normal out of bounds and resumption of wrestling. The coach may move towards the mat only during a charged time-out or at the end of the match. (See Rule 2-2) *Rule 7-5-3: *Rule 7-5-3: Unsportsmanlike conduct – is called on coaches or other team personnel who violate the bench decorum rule. (See Rule 7-5-2)

Championships Individual Regionals: –Reporting Deadline – Feb. 6:00AM –Feb Individual State: –Feb ; 3 day format; All will wrestle on Thurs. night--2A will begin, followed by 3A and then 4A. 1A will begin on Friday. –Site: Greensboro Coliseum

Points of Emphasis Match Weight Form: –REQUIRED to exchange at ALL matches and tournaments – Shows lowest weight at which each wrestler may weigh-in at the next match – Shows lowest weight class at which he/she may compete – All coaches should receive a copy of this sheet for matches. Season Limit: 55 matches/ season – season ending conference tournament does not count against limit. –Nationally: concern about number of matches being wrestled Matches after Regular Season Ends –do not count towards regional tournament seeding

Points of Emphasis Weigh-ins: –Must occur daily and weekly –Beginning with the first regular season contest, match weigh-in required to be entered into OPC within 24 hours of conclusion of the match or tournament –Must be conducted and observed by all participating coaches –All sheets—weekly and match—must be available for NCHSAA review Club Team Wrestling: Numbers count once the wrestling season ends; wrestlers cannot represent the school and cannot wear school singlet

National Sports Medicine Advisory Committee Issues  Communicable Skin Conditions: if wrestler showers or uses full body wipes—can help with prevention  Certified Scales: Rule says accuracy of scales shall be certified annually  # of matches being wrestled  Headgear during practice: Can help prevent cauliflower ear

Rules/Reminders  NWCA Registration by October 15 th  Certifier for Hydration and Skinfold Measuring  All forms you need are on-line  Dead Periods: Fall: August 1 – Sept. 1 Spring: February 12-March 12 (soon as season ends)

Concussion Rule  Must be followed—it’s the law! Yearly review and signatures required RTP updated; on the website EAP must be updated and shared with staff at your school Supposed to be reviewed by a licensed athletic trainer There is a list posted on the website—Health and Safety—of names of persons who can review your EAP

Coaches’ Education Requirement –NFHS “FUNDAMENTALS OF COACHING” All non-faculty (non-teaching, certified personnel) and All newly hired coaches (new to your LEA, and have not passed the course) must complete and pass the certification –If currently a non-faculty coach, certification course must be completed prior to first day of practice. –On-line nfhslearn.com Cost of course is $35 and is a one-time completion requirement to be nationally certified. –Target date of August 1, 2015 for all coaches to be certified

Sportsmanship  Star Sportsmanship Course – for ejected or DQ’ed coach/wrestler $7 fee  Fighting Ejection – coach has to take different course “Teaching & Modeling Behavior (at least $20)

Transfer Policy If you make a bona fide change of residence, no transfer waiver required for satisfy residence eligibility All non-traditional member schools will be treated as its own LEA LEA’s must have a policy to govern inter-system transfers; if no policy, then sit for 365 days All waiver requests from one LEA to another will be handled through NCHSAA

Board Approved Items  Clarified Endowment game language  Changed the title of “Booking Agents” to “Regional Supervisor”; this is for all sports  Made a change to Ejection Criteria relative to players leaving the bench $500 fine for player (s) leaving bench if unauthorized i.e. there is no fight (ejected for 2 games)
