All rights reserved DEFINITION OF A GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE The sequence a 1, a 2, a 3, a 4, …, a n, … is a geometric sequence, or a geometric progression, if there is a number r such that each term except the first in the sequence is obtained by multiplying the previous term by r. The number r is called the common ratio of the geometric sequence.

4 © 2010 Pearson Education, Inc. All rights reserved RECURSIVE DEFINITION OF A GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE A geometric sequence a 1, a 2, a 3, a 4, …, a n, … can be defined recursively. The recursive formula a n + 1 = ra n, n ≥ 1 defines a geometric sequence with first term a 1 and common ratio r.

All rights reserved THE GENERAL TERM OF A GEOMETRIC SEQUENCE Every geometric sequence can be written in the form a 1, a 1 r, a 1 r 2, a 1 r 3, …, a 1 r n−1, … where r is the common ratio. Since a 1 = a 1 (1) = a 1 r 0, the nth term of the geometric sequence is a n = a 1 r n–1, for n ≥ 1.
