MEASURING SUCCESS…  Solid waste landfill operations  Solid waste collection

Environmental Services Department Collection Services Division

 Refuse Collection  Curbside Recycling Collection  Curbside Greenery Collection  Special Collection Collection Services Division $ 49.7 M FY 2004 Budget TrucksPositions

Refuse Collection  Over 315,000 weekly residential collections  Over 29,000,000 total refuse, recycling and greenery stops per year  More than 374,000 tons collected yearly 2004 City Survey Results 97% Customer Satisfaction Rating!

TRAVEL DISTANCE: Refuse Collection Routes With such a large geographical area to cover in the collection system, one of the priorities in reducing air emissions was to find a way to reduce miles traveled.

Reduces mileage by 20% with the incorporation of RouteSmart software. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Partially activated, and has already saved: 23,000 miles/year 11,500 gallons of fuel 129 tons of CO2

GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)

Project Impacts  Save taxpayer money: Up to $600,000 in General Fund in first year.  Reduce air pollution: Smaller fleet, reduced miles, “Zone” management.

“ How can we afford not to do it! It is not just sustainability that is at issue. We are, in fact, talking about the survivability of our communities, our countries, and our world. At the City of San Diego, there is always something we are working on, something we are planning, and something we are dreaming about that will contribute to a sustainable future.
