AASL Standards Why the AASL Standards should be utilized in the Regular Education Classroom Presented by: Jana Bowling

Guiding Questions What are the AASL Standards? Why should we collaborate with the Media Specialist to meet these standards? How will the AASL Standards help my students learn and meet my content area standards?

What are the AASL Standards? The American Association of School Librarians developed these standards to address the new needs of the media center. As students begin to use multiple literacies to gather and understand information, the definition of information literacy has changed.

What are the AASL Standards? For each Standard, students must develop the following: -Skills -Dispositions in Action -Responsibilities -Self-Assessment Strategies The four AASL Standards are: 1.Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge. 2.Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge. 3.Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democractic society. 4.Pursue personal and aesthetic growth.

Standard 1 (in a few words) Students will develop the skills necessary to follow an inquiry-based process, including how to find and evaluate proper sources and how to gain meaning from information gathered. Students will develop an inquisitive nature and want to find out more. Students will respect guidelines, contribute ideas, and use information technology responsibly. Students will learn how to monitor their own progress.

Standard 2 (in a few words) Students will apply critical-thinking skills to information and draw conclusions which they will use to create products to express their new understandings. Students will draw conclusions based on logic and will develop flexibility in the use of resources. Students will connect their understanding to the real world and use reason to make decisions. Students will determine how to act on information.

Standard 3 (in a few words) Students will communicate understanding to others and connect learning to the community. Students will demonstrate leadership, teamwork, and social responsibility, when working with others and information. Students will respect other opinions and use information to form and contribute to an exchange of ideas. Students will be able to assess the effectiveness of a product and their own abilities to work in groups.

Standard 4 (in a few words) Students will read for pleasure and seek information for personal learning from a variety of resources. Students will show motivation in personal learning goals and will be open to new ideas based on what he/she has learned. Students will participate in a social exchange of ideas and seek opportunities to grow personally. Students will identify areas of interest and be able to evaluate how he/she learns.

Why Should We Collaborate with the Media Specialist? The Media Specialist is a teacher in the building, who specializes in helping students gather, process, and internalize information. If the Media Specialist can concentrate on how your students will receive the information, you can concentrate on more on what information the students need to receive. DIVIDE AND CONQUER!

How will the AASL Standards help my students learn and meet the content area standards? The AASL Standards can be used for any inquire-based project. Applying real-world connections make students want to learn. A student that is responsible about obtaining information and knowledgeable about how to present that information is a student that will learn. We want to create life-long learners - the AASL Standards will help our students become inquirers in their own reality!
