1. Competitiveness clusters in Wallonia  Walloon Government has launched 5 Competitiveness Clusters in 2006:  networks of companies, universities and training centers  developing innovative projects  managed by companies  for creation of business and employment  with international dimension  Pôle MecaTech: cluster in mechanical engineering Page 2June 2010

2. MecaTech: cluster in mechanical engineering  Mechanical engineering covers a broad scope of technologies and applications  During last decades: introduction of electronic, optic, chemistry, … we see now: nanomaterials, biology, biomimetisme, …  hybridation of technologies  rupture innovation  transfert of technologies both ways (small and medium companies and large) Page 3 June 2010

3. Results of 5 projects calls in MecaTech  23 research projects, 7 investments projects and 14 training projects involving 31 large companies (42 participations in projects, some companies are participating to several projects) 65 small and medium sized companies (85) 53 university laboratories(76) 15 research centers (34) 3 high scool (3) 3 training centers (14) Total: 170 actors (254) 400 companies cartography  For a total investment of 140 millions €  18 new projects are under preparation for the 6th call for projects Page 4June 2010

Page 5 4. Strategic axes  4 strategic axes have been chosen:  New materials and surface treatments including nanomaterials  New technologies for shaping parts  Microtechnologies and mecatronic  Intelligent manufactring and maintenance  Those technologies are implemented in different types of products and fields : medical, automobile, green energy products, recycling of materials, … June 2010

Page 6 5. Choice of projects  Strategy and projects are chosen by the Board of Directors of MecaTech and 5 international experts, then submitteed to the Walloon Government  The Board of MecaTech is composed of  6 representatives of large companies  6 representatives of small and medium sized companies  3 representatives of universities  1 representative of high schools  1 representative of training centers June 2010

6. Exemples of projects  New materials and surface treatments  Active surfaces coatings  Nanotubes and nanopowders  New surface treatments and lubrification for mechanical systems, i.e. car engines  « Chromium free » process for galvanized surfaces  New technologies for shaping parts: thixoforming  Microtechnologies and mecatronic  Proton therapy of cancer  New laser technology  Intelligent manufactring and maintenance  Expert systems,  Telediagnosis, … June 2010Page 7

7. Exemples of fields of applications  Medical  Proton therapy  Flexible intra-occular lenses  Ceramic pumps for pharmaceutical industry  Automobile  surface treatments and lubrification  simulation  Green energy  Energy recovery systems  Independent solar heating with chemical storage  Materials recycling:  Processing and valuation of metal waste June 2010Page 8

Page 9 8. International dimension  The projects must be deployed in international markets  International partnerships are expected  New cartography: 400 compaies June 2010
