Hilversum Media Production University Introduction Programme -Team Hilversum:1 Alkmini P., Ameya T., Anton O., Eugenia K., Grace K., Nischal S., Thomas J., Yi Z.

Overview Background Thought-Process – Aims – Objectives – Challenge Product – Description – Features

Background City of Hilversum: Part of the Randstad conurbation in the Netherlands. Well known as the Media-City as it’s the main centre for radio and television broadcasting in the country. Population of around 87,000. Also known for its architecturally important Town Hall (Raadhuis Hilversum)

Background University of Hilversum. Truly Global University: 90% of the total are international students (Nationalities include: Germany, Scotland, Russia, China, India and Greece) Media Production Master course. Media Park

Background Thought-Process – Aims – Objectives – Challenge Product – Description – Features

Thought-Process Aims: Help acclimatize all the International students for their stay in this foreign city. Culturally integrate Dutch and International students

Thought-Process General comments by International students: Unpredictable nature of weather in the Netherlands. Widespread use of bicycles. Food (Burgers for meals??!!!) Student-Teacher relation seems to be more casual. Difficulty in finding things in Netherlands that are specific to one’s home country. Less working hours( nobody is complaining though!).

Thought-Process Things internationals need to know for acculturation in the Netherlands: Preparing for the weather. Bicycle Safety. Acquaintance with the City.(what to find where…) Acquaintance with Dutch Transportation system. Understanding Dutch Educational system. Typical Dutch v/s International mannerisms.

Thought-Process Product Objectives: Product activities to get international students to learn about acculturation and the local area. Get international and the Dutch students to work as a team. Make sure each nationality can make a valuable contribution. Introduce students to each others culture. Have the students do something they are all good at, related to their studies, and also enjoy.

Background Thought-Process – Aims – Objectives – Challenge Product – Description – Features

Product Description: Get ready for some Serious Fun! Students work in groups of 10. They have to choose from a collection of movie clips, all of them in different languages from all of the countries represented and use them to make a short film. The movie thus made must achieve any one of the objectives discussed earlier, and must educate other students about its subject.

Product Features: Helps to break the ice. Everyone within the group learns about the topic. Each one can contribute not only in the film-making per- se, but also in translation. Presenting their work to others would in turn benefit other international students. Helps to learn the aspects of Dutch as well as other cultures. Also, enables to learn film-making in different styles.
