3 Where? The Summer Course „Experience the Spirit of Europe“ takes place in Maastricht and Aachen in the heart of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine Trips to the neighboring countries Belgium and France are also included

5 How Much? Participation fee
including accommodation, breakfast, local transport (trains and buses), fees during field trips, a weekend trip to Paris, a farewell dinner and guidance by host universities 1450 € Downtown Monschau Maastricht by night

Introduction to the European Union COURSE DESCRIPTION / AIMS This lecture/workshop will provide students with an insight into the European integration process, based on a historical overview of the development of the European Union. Students will be made familiar with the structure and institutions of the European Union. CONTENT Students will be introduced to the origins of the European integration process, given the most important developments within its more-than-50-year history and then be familiarised with the most important institutions running the Union and how they interact with one another. Origins and history of European integration The constitutional set-up of the EU The most important institutions of the EU (Commission, Council, Parliament)

EU Enlargement COURSE DESCRIPTION / AIMS The goal of this lecture is to understand the European enlargement process and thus not only the simple increase in member states but also the ongoing deepening of cooperation inside the EU as for instance the enlargement of the Eurozone. After a short overview of changes in the European map since 1900 this lecture focuses on the enlargement process after the fall of the iron curtain. Chances and challenges of both, old and (potential) new member states, are analyzed. CONTENT Political changes in Europe from 1914 to 1989/1990 The chances and challenges of Eastern European enlargement for old member states and potential candidates Preparing for enlargement …

Social Cohesion in the EU COURSE DESCRIPTION / AIMS The goal of this class is to introduce students to the need for social cohesion within the EU, consisting of different member states, each with a different culture and/or language. The EU policies to improve social cohesion will be explained by means of concrete examples in the cross-border area of the Euregion Meuse-Rhine. CONTENT The following aspects will be discussed: The concept of Europe, various dimensions, various perspectives, some demographic data, Europe and the rest; different states, different nations, different policies, models of the European welfare state.

Cross-Cultural Management Workshop COURSE DESCRIPTION / AIMS The objective of this interactive workshop is to introduce students to intercultural communication considerations and identify potential impediments to communicating effectively with people from other cultures. The three main goals are to identify differences between European cultures and the culture of the USA, to enable effective communication with people for other cultures and to start developing cultural intelligence. CONTENT An interactive and hands-on workshop, including role-play and games. Students will be made familiar with cultural differences and will be given tools to understand these differences and to communicate effectively.
