NUMERACY IN EVERY CLASSROOM. ADAORA NWEGBU MATHS TEACHER NUMERACY LEAD, BRISTOL BRUNEL

NUMERACY IN EVERY CLASSROOM. Why? We all require a basic level of numeracy in order to do all sorts of everyday tasks successfully. Some of our students do not achieve at least a grade C in Maths first time round (32.8% at BBA 2014) We need good maths and numeracy skills for well-paid jobs. “The more you know, the more options you have available.“ Dr Math, The Math forum.

NUMERACY IN EVERY CLASSROOM How? Start with the basics Times -table games Long division and multiplication practice Mental maths Primary- Maths and Numeracy is timetabled in Pushing G&T students? (not more of the same) Secondary…

NUMERACY IN EVERY CLASSROOM

Maths – nth term and patterns Music – Composing rhythms using a rhythm grid. Different value notes are combined to create a rhythm of a certain length with the correct number of beats making up a variety of rhythmic patterns.

NUMERACY IN EVERY CLASSROOM

NUMERACY IN EVERY CLASSROOM. ANTHROPOMETRICS Anthropometrics is the study of the sizes of people in relation to products. Task: 1)Write a definition of anthropometrics. 2)Explain what measurement of the body we need to take to design a hat. 3)What units of measurement do we use in technology, and why? 4)Why is it important to collect anthropometric data before making a product? How do you think anthropometrics relates to our project? centimetres millimetres How many centimetres in a metre? How many millimetres in a centimetre? What units of measurement do we use in technology? Why? What measurement would hat designers need to take? 1 cm 12 mm 2.5 cm

WHAT TYPE OF GRAPH? Line Graph The proportions of gasses in the air. Scatter Graph The amount of people in a class with different hair colours. Pie Chart How the extension of a spring changes with different masses added. Bar Chart How the speed of a runner changes over a race. I would use a… To show… To get a 1 this lesson I must: Come in quickly and quietly, get started with tasks straight away, have a go at all tasks, put up my hand if I’m stuck.

4. PLOTTING YOUR DATA Carefully use the scales for your axes to plot the mean (average) plot for each data point You may find it easier to plot if you round the mass and average time columns to one decimal place (1 d.p.) Plot the point as a small neat “x” (less than half a small square in size) Use pencil!

NUMERACY IN EVERY CLASSROOM What? Improved confidence in teaching Maths and Numeracy; leading to students being more confident Higher attainment in Maths (more students achieving a grade C or above). Higher take up of Maths in Post -16 Culture change starting in your classroom- I CAN do Maths and Numeracy successfully.
