Overview of Semester 1 Contextual and Critical Studies

The Museum without Walls Weeks 1 -6

The Brief: ‘Museum without Walls’ Introduce basic research skills Encourage the development of a wide range of approaches to information gathering Build knowledge and awareness of historical and critical context of art and design practice

Key stages Allocation of an iconic ‘object’ (today) Formal training in research skills using Library resources (tomorrow) Finding out whatever you can (this week and the next 3 weeks) to prepare an information sheet on your ‘object’. Meeting staff in groups to talk about your findings so far (see timetable) Add your information sheet to a First Year Timeline by Monday 22 October

What should be on the ‘information sheet’ ? Include at least ONE clear image of your ‘object’ and words describing: –What it is, who ‘made it’ and when? –Why you think it might be important. –What it means to you? Make it INTERESTING and LEGIBLE Size? 2 sheets A4 max. Add your name and research sources
