Reasons for the Age of Exploration 1. CONTINUED - – Nations wanted to claim new lands and riches; WHY - GLORY – Spread Christianity. WHY - GOD

Portugal Begins Age of Exploration Prince Henry “the Navigator” He started a school of navigation where sailors and mapmakers could learn their trades. His expeditions explored the coast of Africa (EXAMPLE, WHERE)

Bartolomeu Dias: He became the first European to sail around the Southern tip of Africa (Example of Where).

Vasco da Gama: He sailed to India and brought valuable spices (Where) back to Portugal.

Pedro Cabral: Cabral sailed to present-day Brazil and claimed its lands WHAT for Portugal – GLORY In India, he established a trading post WHAT and signed a trading treaty.

IMPACT OF PORTUGUESE EXPLORATION Africa After the native population of Brazil decreased, millions of Africans were brought to Brazil as slaves WHAT (where).

Asia: Portuguese seized seaport in of Goa in India and built forts there. They attacked and killed all the people defending the main port of the Spice Islands (EXAMPLE OF GLORY – WHAT).

Americas: The Portuguese established colonies in Brazil and tried to convert the native peple to Christianity. WHAT Native people were forced to work on sugar plantations. Many died from overwork or disease.

Christopher Columbus: Sailed west, not east, to find the easiest route to Asia EXAMPLE OF WHERE; He landed on an island in the Caribbean Sea and claimed it for Spain – GLORY; WHAT Found new world that was new to Europe

Impact of Spanish Exploration and Conquest Europe: Spain rapidly expanded foreign trade; Became one of Europe’s richest and most powerful country.

The Americas: New animals, like the horse, were introduced;
