Primary Science & Technology Challenge Have a Go!

The objectives of the cluster are:  To outline the requirements of the annual Primary Science & Technology Challenge;  To consider the design process;  To list the materials and tools which may normally be provided during the competition;  To demonstrate the use of a selection of the materials and tools.

What would help the children?  To work collaboratively  Problem-solve  Be familiar with the following construction exercises: 1.Buggy 2.Marble run 3.Tower 4.Box 5.Pulley system 6.Pneumatics 7.Electric circuit

Plan & Design

Have experience of the following equipment / skills: Planning & designingPlanning & designing Piercing / drillingPiercing / drilling Cutting – scissors, snips, (stitch ripper), junior hacksaw & bench hookCutting – scissors, snips, (stitch ripper), junior hacksaw & bench hook Sticking – blu tac, masking tape, glue gunsSticking – blu tac, masking tape, glue guns Stabilising – corner strengtheners, g-clamp, lynx jointerStabilising – corner strengtheners, g-clamp, lynx jointer MeasuringMeasuring Recording – notes, sketching, annotationRecording – notes, sketching, annotation Reviewing – trial, modify (if required) and update notesReviewing – trial, modify (if required) and update notes

Materials required for exercises 1 – 4 ( Buggy, Marble Run, Tower & Box)  Card (various thickness), paper, correx (corriflute)  Wooden jelutong 1cm square section  Dowel rods to suit wheels  Support triangles  Axle mounts (various types)

Processes and related materials required for exercises 5 – 7 ( Pulley system, Pneumatics & Electric circuit) Processes and related materials required for exercises 5 – 7 ( Pulley system, Pneumatics & Electric circuit)  Pulleys to create movement Various sizes of pulley to suit dowelVarious sizes of pulley to suit dowel Drive belt (elastic band)Drive belt (elastic band) Method of attachment – glueMethod of attachment – glue  Syringes (various sizes) to create movement PVC hosingPVC hosing Use of T jointsUse of T joints  Electrics (various circuits) lightslights buzzerbuzzer motor systemmotor system

Have a Go Have a Go Using the materials provided:-  Level 1 - Design a buggy that will travel 5 m in a straight line;  Level 2 - Design a buggy that is battery powered and which will travel 5 m in a straight line;  Level 3 - Design a lorry with a lifting trailer and warning light that will travel 5 m in a straight line.

The objectives of the cluster are:  To outline the requirements of the annual Primary Science & Technology Challenge;  To consider the design process;  To list the materials and tools which may normally be provided during the competition;  To demonstrate the use of a selection of the materials and tools.
