ME 143 Vehicle Design Automobile Roll Over Simulation Created By: Jeffrey H. Cho

Objective Using an existing Nastran4D 3D model, simulate an automobile roll over accident.

Procedure: Step 1 Create extended road surface and fix in place. Position vehicle so tires and road surface are coincident.

Procedure: Step 2 Set initial velocity equal to ft/s (35 mph).

Procedure: Step 3 Apply 7500 lb instantaneous forces when the simulation step frame = 17 to front right and rear left wheels to produce counterclockwise rotation.

Procedure: Step 4 Insert meters to measure velocity, angular acceleration, impulse force between front right tire and road obstruction.

Procedure: Step 5 Position road obstruction so impact occurs when vehicle has rotated approximately 90°.

Results Initial Velocity:51.33 ft/s (35 mph) Maximum Angular Acceleration:238.8 rad/s 2 Maximum Tire / Obstruction impulsive force:5.414 E+4 lb*ft/s Vehicle roll-overs can occur at low speeds.
