Removing an Indwelling Catheter ACC RNSG 1341 online

1* Check physician’s orders & hospital policy Obtain/check supplies for procedure

1* Wash hands

1* Enter room, introduce self appropriately (name, what going to do)

1* Identify patient using two forms of I.D. explain purpose and procedure

1* Ensure privacy.

2 Don clean gloves.

3 Prepare client by proper draping.

4* Connect syringe to appropriate catheter port and withdraw all fluid from balloon.

5 Instruct client to take a deep breath, pinch tubing and gently remove catheter.

6 Allow urine to drain from tubing into collection bag.

7 Provide perineal care if needed Assist client to a comfortable position.

8 & 9 Measure urine output Dispose of urine, catheter and equipment

10 Remove gloves and perform hand hygiene.

11 Document assessment, procedure, and client response. Record urine volume with I & O data. Thank you for reviewing how to perform the procedure prior to demonstrating on a person!
