Mental Factor-Anticipation in Handball

What is anticipation? Anticipation is being able to predict a situation happening before it has actually happened.

Anticipation in sport In many sports, some performers seem to have all the time in the world whilst others always seem to be in a rush. One reason for this is that skilled performers can recognise cues and patterns and then predict the next set of movements. Being able to do this successfully means that they can be in the right position the majority of the time-thus seeming like they have more time to carry out their actions.

Positive Impact of anticipation in handball In attack In attack, anticipation can help my performance as I am often able to predict where my team mates will be moving to on court based on how the opponents defence are set up. By watching the runs of my team mates I can predict where they are going to go next and be one step ahead of the game. In doing this I can play passes into space for them to move into and create goal scoring opportunities that will result in my team scoring more goals that we concede and therefore win more games.

Positive Impact of anticipation in handball In Defence In defence, when my team set up to play a 3-2 defensive zone, we are aiming to put pressure on our opponents when they come into our half of the court. The other team tend to stand around the outside of our zone, attempting to play quick passes to break us down and create space. At the right time I must commit to trying to intercept passes by predicting where the other team are going to pass to next. If I can time this correctly by using good anticipation, my team can steal the ball from the opponents and even begin a fast break of our own. In this situation we have stolen possession from our opponents which means they cannot shoot and score, therefore giving us a better chance of winning the game.

Negative impact of anticipation in handball In defence In attack Create examples that paint a picture, situations that you have been in before. Remember to reflect on what you are trying to do at the end of the activity which is to win.
