Academic Workout Jim Burke Monitoring Your Understanding

Monitor Informational Text As you read informational text do quick summaries at the end of each paragraph to identify which parts of the text you understand and which parts you do not.

Monitor Fictional Text As you read fictional text try to visualize the action/setting/events.

Fix – up Strategies Reread Look up words you do not know (if appropriate) Slow down Ask someone else (if appropriate) Use context clues

Review of Key Points When you monitor your understanding while reading, you check how well you understand, or comprehend something. Asking questions and summarizing as you read will help you indentify which parts of the text you do not understand. When you realize you are confused, use a fix-up strategy.

I Can… Monitor my comprehension of a variety of texts. Identify and use fix-up strategies when I don’t understand something.
