3 Reading Strategies "If I don't understand pages I skip them. Sometimes I skip one sentence or paragraph, sometimes I skip over pages. I never go back." Reading strategies are conscious decisions— sets of steps that good readers use to make sense of text. Reading Strategies help students become purposeful, active readers who are in control of their own reading comprehension.

4 PREDICTING Anticipating the events in a story based on your prior knowledge and/or ability to make inferences based on details from the story’s title and/or plot.

5 QUESTIONING Asking questions while reading. These can be details that need clarification or things you may be curious about regarding the characters, plot or setting.

6 CONNECTING Finding a connection between what you are reading and another piece of literature, event from history, movie, your life etc.

7 VISUALIZING Seeing the action of a story in your mind while reading. How would characters, rooms, or objects look in a movie?

8 CLARIFYING Identifying something you do no understand or an area of confusion, then doing some research to clear up what was confusing. Go back and reread!

9 INFERENCE MAKING Using one’s prior knowledge to draw conclusions that are not explicitly stated in the text. Something that’s not said in the text, but you get the feeling of something…
