Activities Student Timeline- students will make a timeline of their lives. They will collect pictures, and arrange them in a chronological order. Students will research American Indian Heritage month. They pick a specific topic to present to the class.

Activities Cont.. Compare ways of communication throughout history. Research a historic individual and present to the class what significance they had in history. Dress up as an important historical figure.

Activities Use a map to retrace the national trail in Ohio. Look up Native American sites in Ohio. Collect information to write a report about a famous Ohioan,

Activities Cont.. Students will search the web, look in magazines, etc.. to find a story about how volunteers have helped change society and will discuss briefly with the class what they found. Identify various cultural groups in the school. Then research one of them to present to the class in a creative manner.

Activities Groups of students will create their own plays portraying various world cultures. Students will write to a pen pal from a different country. Make a display including various items from their culture and background to display for the class.

Activities Cont. Make a map of Ohio, students will locate the capital, major cities, rivers, also locate where they live. Students will create a legend that corresponds with their map.

Activities Students will do a research project on how to manage money. Students will work together as a mini-economy. They will be responsible for fake money, budgets, trading, and running businesses. Compare household appliances and cleaning supplies today to earlier Ohio communities.

Activities Cont.. Students will experiment ways of producing a particular product through and assembly line. Students will chose a product and trace the resources needed to make that product.

Activities Find out the current government projects in Ohio. Discuss the functions for each branch of local, state, and federal governments. Have students hold a mock election. Have guest speakers who hold government positions come and speak to the class about their jobs.

Activities Cont.. Field trip - visit a local court house or witness a court case.

Activities Citizenship Board - students will decorate the board with activities that they have done to be good citizens. Make a class elective and their roles. Students have to complete a community project. They will get to decide what they want to do as a class.

Activities Cont.. The class will discuss current event issues that are meaningful to them. Will work in groups on a project that they feel will benefit their communities. They will have to demonstrate good group skills. (cooperating, involvement, and decision making )

These activities and related websites are suggested for developing lessons for a fourth grade class. All of the stands are needed for a complete Social Studies program. Weaving them together will enable students to develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for their communities as well as for their personal lives.
