Presentation transcript:

Guyana’s rainforests have, so far, been relatively untouched but pressure is growing on the president to use the resources from the rainforests to improve the Country’s economy and strength in the global market. You are advisors to the president of Guyana. What are the arguments for saving the rainforest area? What are the arguments for developing the rainforest area? What decisions would you make? Use the next slide to compare arguments and make your decision… Guyana Continent: South America Population: 1,182,000 Capital: Georgetown

How else can we raise money for our people? Politician The rainforest is our life- it provides wood, food and medicine for my people. Tribe Leader Countries like the UK have used their resources to develop their economy. Why can’t we? Politician If we cut down the trees, we may never get them back. What will we use then? Politician We can use the wood from the trees to make furniture and paper. We can give local people jobs. Logging Company The wooden furniture from countries like Guyana is cheap, good quality and very popular with our customers. UK Furniture Chain The rainforest is the Jaguar’s home. Without it, they will become extinct! Conservationist Click here to find out what the President of Guyana decided to do in 2007…

He offered to preserve the country's entire 50 million acres of rainforest in return for sustainable development funds from the more developed countries. This means that Guyana can plan for more careful and environmentally friendly development and industry. An international organisation (which includes British representatives) are looking to support Guyana as they develop a greener and more sustainable economy. This is a perfect example of different countries working together around the World to reduce impact on the environment!
