University of Iowa K. B. Chandran Workshop on BME Teaching of Innovation, Design & Entrepreneurship

Course Title (1): University of Iowa Bioelectrical Design (51:080: with required courses in Biological systems analysis and medical imaging) Objective: to provide the students with the necessary background to understand, design, and use sophisticated medical equipment. Approach is to provide the students with ample laboratory experiments (usually 8-10), culminating with a class design project that normally requires more than three weeks to complete. Practical design experience is emphasized throughout the lectures and the laboratory experiments. Circuits are designed, built, and tested, and using these, data are gathered and properly analyzed. Safety is paramount throughout the semester’s work. Pre-requisites –Physics II (Electromagnetic Theory) –Biology –Physiology –Electrical Circuits –Biological Systems Analysis Major topics –Electrical Safety –Semiconductor Theory –Operational Amplifiers –Instrumentation Amplifiers –Analog Filters –Biosensors –Sampling Theory –Digital Filtering

Biomechanical Design (51:083 taken with required courses in Biomechanics and Biomaterials) Course Objectives: Design process with emphasis on biomechanical devices; creativity in identifying and solving design problems; working in groups, and exposure to industrial design practices. Course Contents: Concepts of concurrent engineering; Safety and liability issues; Introduction to regulations and patents; team projects with individual design notebook and formal project report with presentation. University of Iowa Course Title (2):

Year-long Senior Design Project Faculty initiated –Engineering: e.g. – Workplace vibration evaluation –College of Medicine (UIHC): - Variable directional defib. technology Industry Sponsored –American Hospital Supply –Vital Images: - Quantitative myocardial reserve assessment from MR First-pass imaging Student initiated –Voice detecting elevator remote –At Home SIDS Monitor Final presentation: BME Senior Design Day (Conference setting; judged by BME Advisory Council; prizes for best three presentations Partnership with Mercy Hospital for design projects : University of Iowa Course Title (3):

Describe particularly novel and/or effective methods you use to teach innovation & entrepreneurship Partnership with Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (College of Business) –Lectures by Center Faculty –Work with MBA students to develop business plan –Competing for entrepreneurial awards Simulated microgravity bioreactor development (2002-statewide competition) Engineering H. E. Storer Student Entrepreneurial Award –Initiated in 2002 with two awards of $2,500/- each –Two BME Students won the awards At home SIDS Monitor X-wire communications Technological Entrepreneurship Certificate –Colleges of Business and Engineering –18 hours of entrepreneurial courses –12 hours required (Accounting for non-business students; Entrepreneurship- New business formation; Capital acquisition and new business formation; Departmental specified course) and 6 hours of electives –May be part of the student Elective Focus Area (EFA: 21 hours of free electives) University of Iowa

How do you measure outcomes? Engineering Core Courses: –Course outcomes worksheet (COW); Evaluation and Assessment SurveY (EASY); Course Assessment Report (CAR) BME Outcomes (8): –COW-EASY-CAR –CAR for Program Elective Courses –Course grades –Ad. Council survey after Design Day presentations –Senior Exit Interview (Survey and Class meeting with Undergraduate Program Committee) –Other Assessments (Seminar attendance (covering contemporary issues); NIH Ethics exam; Selection of EFA; Work experience; Membership in Prof. Societies; Reports and presentation evaluation University of Iowa

Describe a course project or exercise that exemplifies “best practices” University of Iowa
