Awaken~Challenge~Achieve Bringing New Teachers Into the Curriculum Mapping Fold Paige Fenton Hughes, Superintendent, Fremont County School District #1, Lander, Wyoming Julie Mathiesen, Director, Technology & Innovations in Education, Rapid City, SD

Essential Questions How can training of initial contract teachers help sustain the curriculum mapping process in your school/district? Why is the concept of “support” key to making mapping a successful endeavor for new teachers?

Agenda Introductions Overview of initial contract teacher training Support pieces Meshing support and mapping

Reflection Think back to your own induction into teaching How valuable were those experiences? What do you remember the most?

Initial Contract Teacher Training Introduction to the district District-wide initiatives Building-level work Contractual requirements

Support Pieces Leadership team Principals Instructional facilitators Mentors Technology staff TIE trainers

How do the support pieces fit with CM? Each support piece fills a particular need Attempt to set new teachers up for success Support pieces are coordinated with each other

New Teachers Have Maps Available Maps for new teachers are available as resources Can use as a collaborative tool Assists mentors and facilitators Principals use maps as a guide

Technology Used Elluminate to complete the CM training piece remotely Need to let new teachers know the purpose Remote support for new teachers from TIE Support from technology facilitators and leadership team

Communication is Key Websites Wikis…resources available for them Mentors and IFs in contact with principals and each other

Continuously Linking All PD to CM Begin by seeing this as an umbrella  In our maps we want to see evidence that: Diverse needs of students are being addressed Step Up to Writing and 6 Traits are being implemented Formative assessment is being used Technology is being embedded into instruction Best practices are in place (Marzano, UbD, for example)

Reflection… Think back to your own new teacher experiences We’ve shared some ideas today What are some ideas you have for things you could do in your own districts for new teachers, especially with regard to mapping?
