Card Answers #2 3/1/10

What does rotate mean and what does it have to do with the earth? Rotate means to stay in one place and spin around. vearth3.mpg The earth spins on its imaginary axis.

Now you stand up and rotate!

What does revolve mean and what does it have to do with the earth? space3d/eSpace.avihttp:// space3d/eSpace.avi Revolve means to move around something. The moon revolves around the earth. The earth and moon revolve around the sun.

Now you stand up and revolve around your table!

This is an animation of how the planets revolve around the sun.

What tool would we use to see the stars? Inside of telescopes there are Convex lenses that help you see the stars and planets.

What is the diameter of the sun? 1.4 million kilometers or 870,000 miles wide. Earth is only 8760 miles wide.

What is the biggest star in our universe?

But it really is a medium size star. Then why does it look so big to us??? Because we are so close to it!!! Try the finger test!

What is a sunspot? Dark spots on the sun that are cooler areas than the rest of the sun.

Does the sun rotate?

Why do the constellations appear to be in different places each night?

The stars never move. Think about the sun. It is a star. It never moves. Stars never move. The earth is moving (rotating and revolving), so it makes the stars LOOK like they are moving when really it is just the earth moving.

What are the seasons?

Why do we have seasons? The tilt of the earth on its axis is the main reason. The tilt of the earth causes some parts of the earth to get direct sunlight (more heat) and other parts of the earth to get indirect sunlight (less heat).

Direct heat (hot) Indirect heat (warm)

Why do objects weigh less on the moon than on earth? Gravity is the measure of how much gravity it takes to hold you down on earth. 50 pounds 25 pounds

The moon has less gravity so it takes less gravity to hold you on the moon. Less gravity = less weight 50 pounds 25 pounds

Why is it better to wear white clothing on a hot, sunny day? Think about this..... What colors absorb heat and which colors reflect heat? Dark colors absorb heat...so they hold heat inside. Light colors reflect heat....so they reflect the heat off of the materials.

Which car will be hotter inside and why? 95” inside120’ inside

Which shirt will be hotter to wear and why? 85” inside100’ inside

Light colors reflect heat!!!! Dark colors absorb heat!!!!!
