SOLO homepage OLIS and other collections Searches for books, journals, e-books, e-journals, papers etc plus papers in the Oxford Research Archive Articles & Databases sampler Runs a basic “Google style” search over a small pre-selected set of online resources. Of limited use to researchers.

Searching SOLO: OLIS & Other Collections

What can I search for? / What should I put in the box? Titles (of books, journals, publications…). Note search for journal titles NOT article titles Authors Subject keywords What can I search for?

Simple search by title / author To search for a specific title enter the most significant words from the title / author. SOLO will find items including all the words you have entered

To find out where the book is or to order/reserve it click For more info click on the title More information & “getting” the book

SFX: to check for online version (for journals) Libraries which hold the item To request a copy from the stacks Getting it!

University card barcode number Stack requests If you don’t know your password ask at your library

Narrowing down… If you’re looking for a common title narrow down your search using the drop down boxes Limit your search to books, journals, audio-visual… Only return items which include the exact phrase you entered. Only look for words in the title, author, subject etc Limit to a particular library or to online only

Connecting to online resources To connect to full text

Connecting to online resources Date coverage for Chadwyck Most journals are available from more than one database or supplier. Choose which one to use by looking at the date coverage and then click “Go”. Filling in the year, vol, issue boxes is optional! Date coverage for HeinOnline Date coverage for JSTOR Date coverage for Project Muse (No end date = ongoing) Date coverage for Swetswise (No end date = ongoing)

More searches: look out for different versions! Look out for different “versions”. Different versions include different/newer editions and versions in different formats (e.g. online). These “versions” are hidden. To see them click

Re-sorting results By default results are sorted by relevance. To see the most recent items first choose “Date- newest”.

Refining your search by topic, author, date… Narrow down your results by choosing a topic, library, creation date or author. Once you have chosen one topic you will be able to narrow your results further

Refining your results: cancelling refinements Cancel refinements

Finding more results When you have found an item which is good for your research look at the “subjects” listed. To see other items sharing the same subject click on the link You will also find suggestions to find similar items at the bottom right corner of every search screen
