Prior Knowledge What do we know about the Pennsylvania Department of Educaton's Standards Alighed System (SAS)?

At each table brainstorm ideas and concepts related to the SAS element listed on your paper. You have 5 minutes then we will share our thoughts.

Clear Standards Content that establishes what all students need to know, and be able to accomplish. Fair Assessments Multiple measures aligned to the standards that provide feedback on student performance at the classroom, school districts and the state. Curriculum Framework A document or e-document that identifies Big Ideas, Essential Questions, Concepts and Competencies in each subject area and at each grade level. Working Draft of Definitions

Instruction Classroom strategies, methods and activities best suited to help students achieve the expected performance identified in the standards. Materials and Resources Multi-media, text, videos, audio, Internet, maps and other sources used to support learning in the content identified in the standards. Interventions A focused pathway that insures all students meet standards.

Standards Aligned System

Defined Standards Aligned System is a collaborative product of research and good practice that identified six distinct elements, which if used together will provide schools, and districts a common framework for continued school district enhancement and improvement.

Video Introduction by Secretary Gerald Zahorchack and SAS PDE Team.

Standards Aligned System "Every child by name, reaching core academic proficiency in core academic disciplines regardless of zip code, economic status, race, ethnicity or disability."

INSTRUCTION Let’s dig deeper…

SAS Instruction Element Random Reporter Think Pair Share Zero Noise Cycle of Effective Instruction Incorporating Cooperative Learning and 21st Century Skills. Identified processes produced by Dr. Robert Slavin from John Hopkins University

School 1.0 School 2.0 Teacher Centered Content coverage Memorizing information Lecturer Whole group configuration Single instructional and learning modality Memorization and recall Single discipline Isolated Textbook dependent Teachers teaching to one learning style Learning content Learning isolated skills and factoids Acting purely as a student Technology as Add-on Learner Centered Learning and Doing Using Information Facilitator/Co-Learner Flexible grouping configuration Multiple instructional and learning modalities to include all students Higher Order Thinking Skills - creativity Interdisciplinary Collaborative Multiple sources of information Teachers addressing multiple learning styles Learning how to learn Completing authentic projects Acting as professional in the discipline Technology integrated into Curriculum and Instruction

21 st Century Integration Sounds Like Looks like ACTIVE INSTRUCTION ??? “ Hum ”.... Students Teacher Aides Student Teacher

Each CFF regional will work on a document that will be loaded to Ed Hub TIMS space in you IU folder. Please discuss and list your understandings of the section from the Cycle of Effective Instruction as it pertains to CFF and 21 st Century Learning. What does it look like? Sound like? What does 21st Century Learning look like? The COACH who's district is furthest North in THE IU is to be recording.

SAS for Social Studies. Language Arts and Math CFF Lesson/Unit Planning Guide and Reflection Tool found on the coaches moodle and on the flash drive. Support resources provided on the Ed Hub for CFF Coaches, IU TIMs and others

Resiliency What is Resiliency? Resiliency is the ability to spring back from, and successfully adapt to adversity. The ability to bounce back from risks, stress, crises, and trauma and experience academic and life success. ( Henderson,1996)

"Every child by name, reaching core academic proficiency in core academic disciplines regardless of zip code, economic status, race, ethnicity or disability." How can we foster resiliency ? Provide opportunities for meaningful participation and engagement. Increase bonding and connections. Set and communicate high expectations. Set clear, consistent boundaries. Provide caring support. Teach “ Life Skills ”.

Resiliency and CFF Now, please turn to your neighbor on the left. Discuss the Resiliency connections with CFF ’ s opportunities to strengthen a student ’ s ability to spring back from adversity.

So let ’ s review … 1.Discussed and defined SAS 2.Heard from Secretary of Education 3.Identified the Cycle of Effective Instruction. 4.Showed Resources on the Ed Hub and the CFF Lesson/Unit Planning Reflection Tool 5.How to foster Resiliency

What does all this mean to your district ? How would you communicate with your teachers and administrators?
