Manifest Destiny Definition: The phrase Manifest Destiny began to be used in the early 1840s to provide justification for United States expansion westward, into Oregon, Texas, and the southwest. John L. Sullivan came up with the slogan in 1845.

Oregon Country Oregon Country is in a huge area of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountain north of California. These states came from it Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. The Oregon Trail is about 2,000 miles long. It started in Miss Valley. It also went over the Great Plains Rocky Mountains. It crossed the Snake River and the Columba River. The slogan "Fifty-four forty or fight" originated during a dispute between the United States and Great Britain over the Oregon country. Under the terms of a treaty signed in 1818, both nations were permitted to occupy this territory.

Texas The conflict over Texas took place in Stephen F. Austin asked the Mexican government to confirm his father’s land grant. In 1830 the Mexican government issued a decree, or official order, that stopped all immigration from the United States. In 1833 General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became president of Mexico. Texas force barricaded inside a nearby mission called the Alamo. There as a battle that took place there called The Battle of the Alamo. On March 2, 1836 four days before the fall of the Alamo at Washington-on-the-Brazos Texas declares its independence. Sam Houston was the commander and chief.

Battle of San Jacinto The battle of San Jacinto started on April 21, They all cried “ Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!” May 14, 1836 Santa Anna signed a treaty that recognized the independence of Texas. Andrew Jackson refused to annex Texas because the addition of another slave and free states in Congress. Texas officially became state on December 29, James K. Polk when Texas became a state.

War With Mexico New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah and parts of Colorado and Wyoming are part of the territory. The Santa Fe Trail left the Missouri River near Independence, Missouri, and crossed the prairies to the Arkansas River. The Santa Fe Trail was an ancient passageway used regularly after 1821 by merchant-traders from Missouri who took manufactured goods to Santa Fe to exchange for furs and other items available there. The trade with New Mexico affected the United States by Americans settling in the rejoin. Mexican immigration to California influenced the culture in California. With the Gadsden Purchase of 1853, the land acquisition that resulted in the area of the 48 contiguous states today was completed. Southern Arizona and southern New Mexico were purchased for $10 million and named for the U.S. minister to Mexico, James Gadsden. Treaty of Guadalupe and Hidalgo ended the Mexican American War it was signed February 2 nd 1848.

New Settlers in California and Utah The Gold Rush started in 1849 in California. The Forty-niners arrived there in 1849.They had to cross the American River. The forty-niners came from Mexico, South America, Europe, and Australia. As people rushed to a new area to look for gold, they built new communities they were called boomtowns. San Francisco grew from a little town to a large city with about 20,000 people. A Jewish immigrant names Levi Strauss sold the miners sturdy pants made of denim. His “Levi’s” made him rich. The religious refuge in Utah was Church of Jesus Christ of later day Saints. The Joseph Smith where the founder of the church in Smith formed a community in New York. Utah became a state in 1896.
