POLIO PLUS – The path Ahead A Presentation by PDG Uttam Ganguli District Rotary Polio Plus Chairman Rotary International District 3291

POLIO PLUS – The path Ahead INDIA is declared POLIO FREE BUT ….. What if……

POLIO PLUS – The path Ahead Remember??? The last case of polio in INDIA was found here in Revenue District Howrah? In our very own Rotary District 3291 ??

POLIO PLUS – The path Ahead WHO DIRECTOR-GENERAL’S PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY FOR POLIO Pakistan, Syria, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon are countries who have exported polio in 2014 Ethiopia, Iraq, Israel, Somalia and Nigeria are countries infected by polio in 2014

POLIO PLUS – The path Ahead Why is West Bengal Vulnerable? Our state shares its boundaries with Three Countries: Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. Poor and Unhygienic quality of life at different places, mostly in areas of Mursidabad, Baharampur, Bankura, Howrah, Midnapur, Hoogly, Purulia, and suburban Kolkata.

POLIO PLUS – The path Ahead The 4 step way Forward  Focus  Advocacy  Vigilance  Promotion

POLIO PLUS – The path Ahead  Focus Appoint a Polio Chair and a Routine Immunization Coordinator at the club level. Identify vulnerable localities from your club service area. Continue and Stress on NID, SNID and Routine Immunization.

POLIO PLUS – The path Ahead  Advocacy Visit Low Income Area Maternity Homes and Delivery Centers to encourage Routine Immunization. Make Awareness about Polio to would be mothers and mothers who have just delivered. Make Awareness to medical staff there about necessity of administering OPV to new born. Advocate the public in general about Routine Immunization.

POLIO PLUS – The path Ahead  Vigilance Keep vigil at low income areas like slums etc. on general hygiene status and sanitation as well as potable water supply. Report any case of unattended children with signs of loss of physical reflexes, fever, sore throat, muscle pain and stiffness. Clubs in proximity to International Borders to keep strict vigil on children crossing over who may be potential carriers. They may be quarantined on entry. Try to check and educate closed communities who may prevent the pulse & routine polio vaccination process out of ignorance.

POLIO PLUS – The path Ahead  Promotion Continue to promote NID and SNID, with Banners, Posters, March, Meet, Rally, Fliers, Articles, Loudspeakers etc. If possible try to give non-cash incentives to staff working on SNID, NID, and Routine Immunization. If possible try to continue gifts like chocolates, candy, whistle etc to children coming for immunization. Organise small workshops with general public about routine immunization & preventing Polio from making a come back.

Now, IPV shall also be introduced for use at Medical centers POLIO PLUS – The path Ahead OPV and IPV - some facts OPV = Oral Polio Vaccine  Most effective in the eradication of the wild Polio virus  Also helps in passive immunization among the population living in the area. IPV = Inactivated Polio Vaccine  Comes in injection form and needs to be given by a trained medical worker.  Cost is approximately 5 times more than OPV + expenditure of syringes and remuneration of the trained medical worker.  Does not help passive immunization
