Einsteinium was discovered in December 1952 by Albert Ghiorso at University of California, Berkeley. Einsteinium is a member of the actinide series, it is metallic and radioactive with no known uses. It is attacked by oxygen, steam and acids but not by alkalis.

Name of element: Einsteinium Symbol: ES Period: 7 Density: 293 K Block in Periodic table: f-block Classification: Metal Phase at room temperature: Solid Group name: Actinide Melting Point: 1133K(860C or 1580F) Valence Electrons: 5f11 7s2 Oxidation state: 3

In 1961, enough einsteinium was produced to separate a macroscopic amount of isotopes 253. The material produced was used to produce mendelevium. Einsteinium doesn’t occur naturally and it has not been found in the earths crust so there is no reason to consider health or environmental hazards. It is dangerous because the radiation it emits.

Einsteinium is a synthetic transuranic element first produced by the neutron irradiation of uranium in a thermonuclear explosion and now usually produced in the laboratory by irradiating plutonium and other elements. It’s world production is probably less than 1 gram per year. This element was named in honor of Albert Einstein.
