ASENT_CDM.PPT Component Data Manager Last revised 01/10/2011

ASENT_CDM.PPT Introduction The Component Data Manager is the tool in ASENT that allows you to edit and manage part libraries. New parts can be entered here and existing parts can be modified for projects that the user has access to. Parts can also be bulk-loaded from Excel spreadsheets to populate project part libraries. In the Component Data Manager a part may be defined once in the library, but it could be referenced many, many times in various predictions. The Reliability Manager is the tool in ASENT where a product tree structure is defined, and reliability predictions are done.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Introduction The Component Data Manager manages the static data for parts. The static data is the information about the part that does not change regardless of how the part is used. For example, this would include the quality level, rated temperature, rated power, rated voltage, etc… Variable part data would pertain to how the part is used. Here, we would have some of the stress data like the applied power, applied voltage. Project defaults can be defined in the Component Data Manager, but otherwise, the variable part data is entered in the Reliability Manager as part of the prediction. A part cannot be added to the product tree structure or referenced in the Reliability Manager, until it is first added to a project part library. Normally this is done in the Component Data Manager, but parts can be added on the fly in the Reliability Manager or created using the Import Product_Tree.xls template.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Introduction A Prediction Can Reference Parts From Any Library When performing a reliability prediction (in the Reliability Manager) you can reference parts from any project part library, even if you are not assigned to that project. However, a good practice is to establish a common part library for your company. Over time, as this gets built up, it can be a big time saver as members of your team perform reliability predictions. The Common project library is special and comes preloaded with thousands of parts.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Component Data Manager Overview

ASENT_CDM.PPT Component Data Manager Screen Layout

ASENT_CDM.PPT Component Data Manager Data Tabs

ASENT_CDM.PPT Working with the Component Data Manager This screen shows the Component Data Manager with the ‘Parts’ tab selected. Each of the folders represent a project part library. These libraries may have parts or they may be empty. The brown folder indicates that you are not assigned to that project. In this case you can use the data or copy it, but you cannot edit it. The yellow folder indicates that you are assigned to a project. In this case you have full editing privileges on this project’s data.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Selecting Which Project Libraries to View If there are a lot of projects on your server, you may not want to see all of them displayed. You can select just the ones that you want, by clicking on the View | Projects | Select option. A list containing all of the projects will be displayed. You can use the mouse to click on the projects that you are interested in. Be sure and hold the CTRL key down when you are selecting more than one project. When you have highlighted all of the projects to be displayed, then click on the OK button.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Selecting Which Project Libraries to View This screen shows what the project list would look like, if the user selected to view only the CLASSPRJ, COMMON, and DEMOCD_PRJ1 projects. Notice, that this can be very helpful sometimes to eliminate some of the clutter from the screen, so that you can focus on just the project part libraries that you are working with.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Adding a New Part to Your Library To add a new part to a project library, expand the project folder and find the part type that you are interested in. Expand the part type folder to the lowest level (i.e. For some part types like resistors and capacitors this will be down to the style level). Right-click on the lowest level and select the Add option. For Microcircuits, the lowest level will be the part subtype. Here, we right-click on Analog Microcircuit and select the Add option.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Adding a New Part to Your Library Once the Add option is selected the data panel on the right side of the screen will become active. Here, you must fill in the Part Number, but all other blank fields are optional. Notice that some of the data is already filled in. These are static data defaults that are controlled by the Default tab. You can change any of these values by typing over them or selecting new values from pick lists, if applicable. The static defaults used when creating new parts can be modified by selecting the Defaults tab. When adding new parts, ASENT checks the active project library for defaults and if none exist then it checks the COMMON project library. The COMMON project library is somewhat special, and it will always contain default values.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Static Data Default Values Here, we view the static data defaults that are defined in the COMMON project library for a CWR style Fixed Tantalum capacitor. If we add a new CWR style capacitor, ASENT will look for a default in our active project first, and if one does not exist, then it will use the default defined in the COMMON project library.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Copying Existing Parts Parts can also be created by copying similar parts from other project libraries and then making modifications to the new part. Here we right- click on the part that we want and select the Copy option. Right-click on the target part subtype and select the paste option to complete the copy procedure.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Copying Part Libraries Sometimes you may want to copy or merge parts from other project libraries into a single, common library. Right-click on a project library and select the Copy/Merge Library option. Select the type of library data that you want copied

ASENT_CDM.PPT Copying Part Libraries Select the destination project library and click on the OK button. If the part already exists in the target project part library, it will remain unchanged.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Packages Used by Parts Many parts use the same packaging, so in ASENT when you create a part you select the package that it uses. Most of the package data is primarily used when performing a Thermal Analysis. However, some of the package information is used by failure rate prediction models. For example with MIL-HDBK- 217 the number of leads, seal type and whether or not it is hermetic are important. For most part types the package information does not factor into the failure rate calculation. For more information on parts, refer to the ‘Tips for defining new parts’ section of the Component Data Manager online help.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Variable Defaults Used For Predictions One of the most important pieces of data found in the Component Data Manager are Variable Defaults. These are the defaults that the Failure Rate Prediction uses when variable data (i.e. Applied voltage, applied power, etc...) is not supplied by the user. When variable data is missing, ASENT first checks for defaults on your active project, and if none exist, then it will use the variable defaults defined in the COMMON project library. The example above shows the variable defaults that are defined for Fixed Tantalum capacitors on the DEMOCD_PRJ project library. The value for Applied Voltage is set to 10% of what the part’s rated voltage is, and the Series Resistance is set to 1.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Bulk Loading Parts From Excel In the \ASENT\DATA directory there are templates for most major part types. These are Excel spreadsheets that the user can fill in and then import to a project library in ASENT. Values that are left blank in the spreadsheet will be set to the Static Data Defaults defined in ASENT. To bulk load data from one of the ASENT Excel templates, right- click on your project library and select the Import Parts option. Open your ASENT template and start the import process. Part numbers that already exist in your project library will not be overwritten or modified.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Sample ASENT Excel Template Here, we show the ASENT template for bulk loading Microcircuits. By filling in the PN columns you can create duplicates of the same part with different part numbers. Sometimes this is handy if you want a part listed by both a company part number, commercial number, or MIL number.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Sample ASENT Excel Template By clicking on the Valid Values tab of the spreadsheet you can see a list of valid values for various fields in the template.

ASENT_CDM.PPT Searching Part Libraries for Parts ASENT’s Component Data Manager has a powerful wild-card search capability to help you quickly locate part data.Searching can be performed at any level (All libraries, a specific project library, part type, sub-type, style). Here, we search all of the libraries by right- clicking on the Parts folder and selecting the find option. Here, we enter ‘2N22’ as the string to search for and tell ASENT to search the Part Number, Name, and Description fields for a match. Once we click the OK button ASENT will return the results.
