In your table of contents… Add Mars Notes

Mars Mars is called the red planet. The reddish color is caused by rust (iron oxide) in the soil. Most studied planet other than earth. Viking 1 and 2 spacecrafts landed on mars in 1976. Pathfinder spacecraft landed on Mars in 1997. These three space crafts give us most of the information we know about Mars.

Mars Mars is a cold planet because of its thin atmosphere and distance from the sun. The pressure is so low in the atmosphere that any liquid water would quickly boil away. The only water found on Mars is in the form of ice.

Martian Terrain Dry river beds on Mars indicates that there possibly was water in the past. Mars now has two polar icecaps that contain frozen water and carbon dioxide.

Martian Volcanoes Mars has two volcanic regions. Olympus Mons is the largest mountain in the solar system is a extinct shield volcano. Mars has a gigantic equatorial rift valley, the Valles Marineris. This canyon system stretches a distance equivalent to the distance from New York to Los Angeles; Arizona's Grand Canyon could easily fit into one of its side canyons.

Moons of Mars Phobos and Deimos Irregular shapes Very dark surfaces Could be captured asteroids

Mars Facts Distance from the sun 12.7 light-minutes Period of rotation Period of revolution Diameter Surface temperature Surface gravity 12.7 light-minutes 24 hours, 37 minutes 1 year, 322 days 6,794 km -123 to 37*C 38% of Earth’s

On the back of your Mars hw sheet… Imagine you are the first astronaut to travel to Mars. What would you see? How does it feel? Any strange encounters? What do you do while you are there? Collect any samples? Write a journal entry from your perspective as the first astronaut on Mars. Your response should be at least 10 sentences long.
