On August 24, 79 A.D, Mount Vesuvius erupted sending tons of molten ash, pumice, and sulfuric acid miles into the atmosphere. Poisonous vapors and molten debris engulf the surrounding areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae suffocating the towns inhabitants. The cities remained covered for almost 1700 years and weren’t excavated until 1748.

The first time anything of Pompeii was uncovered was in In 1748, Spanish military leader Rocque Joaquin de Alcubierre rediscovered Pompeii in intentional excavations. During the 1860 excavation, Giuseppe Fiorelli discovered that the empty voids in the ash layer that contained human remains were the spaces left by the decomposed bodies.
