The SPSU Growth Laboratory Address to Council, 28 April 2014

Two activities 1. Primary: Doing research in all aspects of growth of the economy of the Russian Federation 2. Commenting on policy issues of interest at the national and local level

Themes Research: comprehensive coverage of growth issues, focusing on employment and productivity Policy commentary: mainly in response to requests from those involved in policy or university authorities Most time allocated to first task

Objectives Understand the fundamentals of the Russian economy and its institutional structure Make policy recommendations about the best way to manage economic change

Research themes Aggregate: current position of Russian economy (role of institutions, policies, resources, transition to free- market economy) Sectoral: which sectors are doing well and which are lagging? Structural transformation since the transition Employment issues: the regulatory structure of labor and product markets. Is there inclusion of all groups and why is there so much inequality?
