8.3 Volume Objectives: To find the volume of a right prism. To find the volume of a right cylinder. To find the volume of a pyramid. To find the volume of a circular cone. To find the volume of a sphere.

Vocabulary The measure of the amount of space that a three-dimensional figure encloses is the volume of the figure. Volume is measured in cubic units. How many unit cubes will fit inside the shape?

Volume of a Right Prism If a right prism has a volume of V cubic units, a base with an area of B square units, and a height of h units, then V = Bh.

Example Find the volume of the right triangular prism.

Volume of a Right Cylinder If a right cylinder has a volume of V cubic units, a height of h units, and a radius of r units, then V = πr 2 h. The base of a cylinder is always the circle. The area of a circle is A = πr 2.

Example Find the volume of the right cylinder.

Volume of a Right Pyramid If a right pyramid has a volume of V cubic units, a base with an area of B square units, and a height of h units, then

Example Find the volume of the right pyramid.

Volume of a Right Circular Cone If a right circular cone has a volume of V cubic units, a height of h units, and the area of the base is B square units then

Example Find the volume of the right cone.

Volume of a Sphere If a sphere has a volume of V cubic units and a radius of r units, then

Example Find the volume of the sphere. 3 m
