Puerto Rico Accomplishments FY08 Grant $306,851 (Total Funding Received) –Over 90 educational activities were held people participated in the educational activities. –48 newspaper, radio and TV interviews were granted. –Evacuation maps, vulnerability profiles, workshops, drills, signage were facilitated to the Municipalities of Manatí, Aguadilla and Ponce.

Puerto Rico Accomplishments FY08 Cont. –Purchased the “Tsunami on Wheels” vehicle –35,000 copies of Tsunami literature and materials were distributed –Participation in the US Delegation at the IV Session of UNESCO/ICG Caribe EWS held in Martinique, US Coast Guard Caribbean Regional Response Team Meeting and USVI tsunami exercise as an Observer in May, 2009.

Puerto Rico Accomplishments FY08 Cont. –Replaced the topographic and bathymetric data base with the new and improved data set. –Increased the grid resolution adding a new nested grid with a maximum spacing of 1 sec/arc. –Full support and coordination of LANTEX 09 in Puerto Rico. A post survey was conducted in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. –Participation in the National Guard Vigilant Guard full scale earthquake and tsunami exercise.

Puerto Rico Accomplishments FY08 Cont. –Due to vandalism, the new tsunami signs are now made in reinforced fiber glass –40 NOAA Weather radios were distributed among key responders in the TsunamiReady FY08 target communities. –Several improvements were made to the AHAB installed in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. –A Spanish TsunamiReady document was prepared and distributed.

Puerto Rico Issues FY08 Issues –In November 2008, municipal and island wide elections were held resulting in a change of administration at state level and for many municipalities. Restriction on activities and spending due to Election period (August – December 2008) –In December 2008, the UPRM changed its accounting system.

Puerto Rico Accomplishments – FY09 FY09 Grant $1,000, (Total Funding Received) –With financial support from the Grant, PRSEMA is naming a Special Assistant to the Director for Tsunamis. –New Puerto Rico tsunami website under development. All documents and reports will be placed on line. –Walter Diaz attended AGU09 and gave a presentation on the Post LANTEX 09 survey.

Puerto Rico Accomplishments – FY09 Cont. –Contract was awarded to establish inventory of tsunami educational resources for K-12 –Renewed contract with PR agency which distributes tsunami information card for tourists. –Tsunami media toolkit under preparation. –Contract was awarded to conduct an island wide survey on tsunami preparedness. –A draft of the tsunami response plan for the Summer 2010 Caribbean and Central American Games has been prepared and is under revision.

Puerto Rico Accomplishments – FY09 Cont. –PRSN and PRSEMA participating in monthly communication tests –PR will participate in LANTEX 2010 –Participation in meetings with state and local emergency managers and suppliers for the purchase of outdoor warning systems (AHABS) –Initial contacts and support to Aguada, Cabo Rojo, Isabela and Quebradillas to become TR. –Puerto Rico Tsunami Ready Summit convened for May 10-14, 2010 in Mayagüez, PR.

Puerto Rico Issues – FY09 Issues –Special Assistant for PRSEMA will not be in function until February 1. This person is responsible for convening the Puerto Rico Tsunami Technical Review Committee, preparing inventories of emergency response plans and mitigation plans and projects for municipalities and critical facilities.

Puerto Rico FY 10 Funding Plan/Proposal Task (Activity) NameNTHMP Performance Metric(s) (from Strategic Plan) Supported Amount of Requested Funds 1.1 Participate in and support regional and national NTHMP meetings, sub committees and activities, as well as coordinate PR activities. 1.2 Place all NTHMP related products on the website Attend and give oral or poster presentations at technical and scientific workshops and conferences to share best practices of the NTHMP and improve the capacity of Puerto Rico in NTHMP priority areas. Successful execution of NTHMP tsunami mapping, modeling, mitigation and education efforts. 90% of action items from Sub- Committee meetings will be completed within one year of being assigned. Advocate tsunami research as applicable to the NTHMP Establish an accessible web-based repository for the NTHMP-related products.
